I have 3 reels that I need to respool before the muskie season starts in a month. What methods/techniques do you guys use when doing it yourself? Just curious to see what others use like backing vs no backing, how to get the proper tension to get it tight on the spool, etc.

I always use fill the bottom of the spool with 10-12lb mono, just enough so you can't see the bottom of the spool anymore, I use a uni knot and electrical tape to keep it secure. Then I tie a blood knot or back to back uni to attach braid to the mono.

yes gota use mono backer... to get in on really tight i start by filling up the spool and over fill it a little then go out side find a nice tree tie it to the tree walk back to empty the spool crank down the drag and slowing walk towards the tree to get it rock hard on the spool

I do everything the same way except to snug it down after overfilling I just let a jackpot or if the bottoms clear a showgirl all the out behind the boat and real it up. Seems to have enough tension to snug it up decent.

I skip the backer and just run electrical tape around the spool a few times. Your line will not slip.

Mono Backing. Same trick with the tree.

Spool up fully with the braid and start by winding on and over the first few passes with double sided carpet or duct tape.
That works for me.

I fill mine 2/3 mono then finish off with braid overfilled slightly. Put a top water on and let the line out on the boat and reel it in.

A whole spool of braid is a waste, like stated above, put down some mono (20%) then braid over.

That depends on your system. I run my used spool of line onto another reel backward. Nothing wasted. First I run the used line from my Revo 60 onto my Revo 50 tossing the discolored portion. Then I run the line from my Saltist onto my 60, tossing the ballance. Very economical and I alway have a full spool of perfect braid.

Thanks for the responses guys. I would usually do the same about filling the spool past capacity, and then tieing off to a tree branch or something and then reeling it back on. Never tried the electrical tape though, I may give that a shot.

i put electrical tape on the spool first instead of mono. It doesn't slip and i have never been down that far to see it after spooling. The electrical tape works just fine. 14 years now.

Location: sneaking out to get on the water ;-)
I fill mine with mono of equal diameter until there's enough room left for 90 yards of 80# braid.
