I'm looking at upgrading my bow mount unit to a Sonar/GPS combo fishfinder. I'm in the initial stages of doing my research and figuring out what I want to get before the upcoming season and am trying to stay under $1000 for everything....unit, map chips, transducer, etc.

What are the pros/cons of units on the market?
What features do you look for and want for muskies?
Any feedback on what you have/use would be greatly appreciated.

Currently this one peaks my interest, but the reviews seem to be half/half.

Thank you!!

I didn't bother to read the reviews, but HDS has had some issues.....I say "had." They seem to be getting ironed out. I have an HDS 8 and after I got it ironed out myself, I love it. It's a great platform with plenty of room for expansion and upgrades. It'd be my choice for what you're looking for.

I am also in market for units, hds look awesome but only thing I am concert with lowerance is their customer service. I had read that people normally spend 30-45 mins on hold on phone and I can't do that since my relay service for deaf have time limit on hold. I want hds 7 or hummngbird 797si

i bought an eagle fishelite 642c for less than 400 at cabelas. They are discontinued and cheap now. The screen is only 5" but for the money it is a good starter gps/depthfinder. It is colour, the screen can be split to any size you want and it has a high pixel count. It is no hds but it looks fine with my new hotmaps chart and the colour depthfinder reportedly marks fish really well. Total cost - $500
My only criticism - this unit will only hilite 15' depths as a safety area (in baby blue) - it cannot be fine tuned to show a shallower safety area or depth range (say 7 - 9' depth) like some of the pricier units can. As a result, shallow lake portions (flats) cannot be contour coloured to show 8' contours easily if say the fish were using that depth... the whole flat looks the same colour requiring more careful scanning to find and stay on contours. I can live with this for the price though.
