You won't be able to tell which strain they are by looking at them. Only genetic tests on them will determine that for sure. There's an interesting article in the latest Musky Hunter about some genetic testing that has been done on a MN lake that used to be stocked with Shoepacs. It received a one time stocking of WI strain. And it also has a native population. So there are 3 strains in the lake as well as a cross between all 3 strains amidst the population.

Lake Mille Lacs has Shoepacs, Leech Lake strain, WI strain, as well as fish from Iowa (which are technically Leech Lake strain). They've done genetic testing on the fish out there as well. We had a member of the DNR at one of our Muskies, Inc meetings awhile back who brought a lot of pictures of the fish they had tested on Mille Lacs. He gave us a quiz of 20 fish where we were to guess the strain. Long story short, good luck! They did this same test in their fisheries office with people that deal with these fish all the time...the professionals on knowing the different strains...the best anyone did at their offices was 14 out of 20 correct.

Hiya,

I would say that for a pure Shoepac, none of them will be from that body of water. If any of them had some genetics of the Shoepac it would be the first one, but like was mentioned earlier, they would have to be tested. The lake in question was stocked with Shoepac over 30 years ago, so any of those fish by now (I feel) would cease to exist. None will be pure shoepac, but definitely could have some shoepac genetics. The last one is a beauty!! I grew up fishing that body of water and there are a bunch of fish in that mid 30's range...

I thought it was stocked with shoepac in the late 80's yet. I do see 50+ fish there wich are native strain but there is alot more shoepac than natives by far! you can never tell unless it is mid 40's and then even you wonder is it 3/4 shoepac or 1/2 or what? so yah your right thanks for the info!

LLS does it bother you that you catch shoepac strain? I am failing to understand what difference it would make? And the term "native" used by you might not correct. How do you know all those fish you (or your brother) caught are not stocked and none were born there. Would that make them "non-native" just as the shoepac are?

muskie nut, It was my understanding it has never been stocked with a pure strain but it had a existing population of pures that I am reffering to as natives and then alot of stocking was done in the 80's with shoepac and since then the majority of fish do not exceed 40". It is a big deal to see a 50+ in there because it has to be a native then wich is cool to know that there are some still around! don't get me wrong I love to fish muskies period that is why I spend so much time there I am just curious to know more about this body of water I love!

Sounds good to me. So when are you going to learn how to do DNA testing?

If you can find Dr Sloss presentation on this web site (muskies 1st) that he did at the Cap City School last year, have a look at that. It may shed some light on some of your questions.

I think he's just looking to learn more about muskies in general.

Aaron is right that the only way to tell is genetic testing. When you have multiple genetics present there will be some mixing. What you are seeing with the markings is juvenile fish tend to have more pronounced markings such as that spotted one from shore. Like mentioned the study on Moose lake has shown that the shoepac strain is showing up less and less with each year class. This tells the DNR that they are not naturally reproducing well for that body of water. Mean while the WI strain is doing well and were introduced to help the overall size class of the lake. If I recall shoepacs tend to grow quick the first few years but then slow down and are generally overall a 'shorter' strain versus the others.

These kind of studies allows the DNR to get a better understanding of what kind of potential a lake may have and what strains thrive best allowing for better stocking decisions down the road.

lol, that would actually be pretty cool to do the dna thing it would answer questions for me, thanks for the tip I'll try to find that!

They all look like leech lakers. That one from shore looks like it is a member of Fight Club.
