Posts: 615 Location: Madison, WI | I'm having trouble making my scales. I have the material I like, It's just really hard to get it to show up when I'm going over darker colors (Blacks, greys) with pearl silver or gold? I really admire how everyone makes it look effortless. Thanks in advance for the helpful tips, MS

Posts: 615 Location: Madison, WI | Thanks, do you use silver and gold pearls (Createx) I use only water based paints, is there a better paint, should I be using the transparent/opaques? Thanks again, MS

Posts: 501 Location: Norway | I just use some cheapo regular hobby acrylic paints for silver and gold. They cover better than the Createx, transparent paints. Besides I like the gold look on the gold paint I buy in the hobby shop here. I just thin them out with windex/water and makes sure to clean the needle alot after Ive used them ![]() Michael

Posts: 32 | Just make sur the paint you are using have alot of pigment in them to cover darker colors. Always hard to put light over dark, but it can be done and looks great. Don't try and use a candie to put over solid color just don't work. A nice sparklee silver of gold looks good over purple/ black, etc. good luck, keith dutch fork custom lures Attachments ---------------- ![]()

Posts: 479 Location: Eden Prairie & Pine Island | How do you painters affix the mesh tightly to the lure before painting? Pictures would be great! Thanks in advance for the help.

Posts: 941 Location: Freedom, WI | I make something that looks like a book with thick cardboard and duct tape and clamp it shut. Make sure the mesh is pulled tight and stays tight.

Posts: 4053 Location: Land of the Musky | I lay mine right over the top of the lure and paint through. I hae also cut out shapes thoguh cardboard and taped teh mesh over it and painted thorugh that to get different effects for painting. I have done the close pin thing too. Right after I hit the bait with paint I hit it with a hair dryer so it drys fast so I do not get any smearing. Seemed to help a little. Plus you can paint the next coat fast if you use a dryer. Hint, DO NOT use your wifes hair dryer ![]() James

Posts: 4053 Location: Land of the Musky | Here is some great stuff I ahve used in the past. Real heavy duty and a lot of different shapes and mesh sizes. Much better than you will get in a fabric shop. http://www.ahh.biz/products/nylon%20mesh%20fabric%20FHM006.htm James

I use only pearlized Createx and have never had a problem with scales showing up. Also, i use small clamps from the Home Depot that i bought for like .30 cents each or something like that to hold the netting on. I will try to upload pictures tonight of the pearlized gold over black scales, and how i affix my netting to the lure. Thanks, Zach

Posts: 941 Location: Freedom, WI | woodieb8 - That is about what I am doing with what I do. I just fold it open and closed, faster then a hoop. For somebody doing a couple of lures I can see it would be a good choice.

u can use a little of white before you put down your silver or gold it makes it pop out more but it is extremely important that the mesh not move. this works better if you have a little bit larger mesh so the lines show up better. check the local wal-mart in the laundry area ( by the hangers and baskets and stuff) look for a nylon garment bag they are really cheap and you can cut them up if you need to or just unzip and put your lure inside the bag clamp and paint. for clamps you can use those black office paper clamps i havent had a problem with them yet and they hold really well
