Location: sw pa | i was wondering if this lake was open year round for musky fishing? i was thinking about taking a trip there if it was open sometime in january. is it good this time of year? and also who is the best guide to get?salchi? since it is a 6 hr drive for me there i would like a good chance to land a beast. thanks |

| January? I don't think I'd drive six hours to fish the Cave in January. That's a pretty tough way to go, unless you get three days of 60 degree weather.......which isn't likely, because, well, it's winter. |

| I'm not saying it's not possible to catch a fish in January, just that it is tough. I stick by that. He asked if that was a good time of year to go to Cave Run and have a shot at a monster. I say "No". Granted, a bad day fishing is still pretty good. I've fished the Cave a lot of years and if there is one thing I've learned it's that you can't force the issue. Those are some of the contrariest fish I've seen. Sure, when conditions are prime it can be easy, but that's far from the norm. In fact, there are way more days in March that you won't catch anything than there are good days. Here's part of Justin Mullins report from last week: "The water temp has dropped down to upper 40's which the week of thanksgiving it was 53-54. I have not been out for the last 4 or 5 days but from what I have heard I didn't miss anything. Some people coming in have not done very well for the last few days." There won't even be a report in January. Just trying to give a fair assessment, you might go down and catch a monster, and I hope you do, but personally I'd wait a couple of months. As for guides, they are all good. There are no secret spots on Cave Run, and it's more of a timing thing. Good luck, if you go. |

| I guess if I had to pick one guide I would go with Gregg Thomas. That guy is a machine, and has always been helpful over the years. If anyone is catching, it will be him. |

Location: Sw Pennsylvania | I'll second on getting Gregg for a guide. My best friend and I fished with him at the end of May last year on the Cave. Had a great time and got into fish. Stand up guy and alot of fun to fish with. |

Location: Elko - Lake Vermilion | Going in Jan. isn't the best time to fish Cave Run, it has even froze up from time to time in Jan.
Also Gregg T., T. Grant may be out of state for Shows and seminars in Jan.
Others you might try: TNT Guide Mike Tackett, or Justin Mullins, (Crashes Landing) Lance Seasor, Scott Salchi, (Tony Grants guys). These guys Really know the water well.
Jan. you'll need to hit points, deeper water, the river channel near weed beds and Timber.........and if you do get some warm weather check out the "Hollers"
Had many fishless days there, but still enjoyed myself and the Peaceful Mountains
that seem to jump out at you sometimes.

Location: sw pa | thanks guys for the replies i appreciate it. i was just wondering cuz the fishing gets better here in the winter months. i just wanted to get away somewhere for a few days where its a tad warmer than PA and fish a day or two. might just have to take a lil longer trip south to TN |

Location: Ohio | Ypu can call the Cave water district at 1-606-783-7001 and they will give you a water report every day of the week it is a recording they post in the mourning. |

Location: Grayson, Ky | cave run can be tough in the winter months but you can still catch fish. Last january before the lake froze over for a week or two Me, salchli, and gregg thomas were seeing some fish and catching a few. I would suggest trolling deep breaks and points close to the bottom, or if you get a few warm days hitting some spots with old weeds like claylike or spots up in beaver creek.

Location: Grayson, Ky | water temps at the cave now are 38-40 depending on where your at, but the next ten days doesn't look good. the reported high for the next ten days is 30 degrees with lows in the single digits. the cave could start to get some ice and maybe freeze over if the cold spell lasts long enough, The fish were biting last week though gregg and i had guide trips and we got one and lost one and he got two and lost one, all fish were caught trolling, however the day before our guide trips gregg and i fished on our own and had some fish up casting as well.

| Things are alittle slow right now for guiding! I'll cut you a good deal on a guided trip!  If you need directions to my house, just walk out your door and cross the street and your there! You don't need to drive 6 hrs., get your a$$ in that boat and go catch em'! LOL! Are you gonna let 15 degree temps and 20 mph winds stop you! What a Sissy! LOL!

the only boat launch open is scots creek, all the rest are froze in. I saw two boat rigges, and talk to a duck hunter at scots yesterday, this is the most ice we have had in some time, the main lake is still open. I might try it next week for muskies. Marv.
Any of you boys know if there is ICE out on Cave ? I see that warmer temps are coming this week.

Location: South Portsmouth, KY | as of today 1/19/10 the lake from twin knobs beach point to dam is open but anything below twin knobs beach is froze. it not to thick so it should be out of here by the weekend. Water murky did mange to see one fish, baitfish stacked out in 25 ft of water.
