I use multiple rods and use a heated blanket and swap the rods as they get frozen..

not a home made remedy but try sticking your rod in the water in to the last guide and do a couple of figure 8s. The water, and water resistance will melt off the ice in a matter of seconds. Another way of putting it is doing a deep figure 8. Let your boat partner know first or they'll be going for the net

Posts: 909 | REEL MAGIC! Wal Mart sells it! (under $5 a can) I spray everything, line and guides! Spray your line(pretty heavy) on the reel and let it soak in overnight! Brian Edited by muskie24/7 1/6/2010 9:35 PM

Posts: 4343 Location: Smith Creek | I would definitely NOT stick your rod in the water. It's a quick fix but there will be twice as much ice on your guides the next cast, not to mention your blank and handle.

Posts: 230 | Petroleum products, like Vaseline or chapstick as previously mentioned works well. PAM oil works well for me too as well. On a side note, never tried the peeing on the rod thing, may have to try that. Cold weather may make it a little harder though! Haha it's a bad joke.....

Swirling the rod in the water does work well. Shake the water off afterwards, of course. Give it a try before you make up a reson for it not working.

Posts: 335 Location: Minnesota | I routinely use the water to rid the eyes of ice, but they freeze up real fast again, faster than if you remove the ice by hand. When it is getting down into the teens and single digits or heaven help us below zero, it is all about keeping the water off the eyes in the first place. To me that means I need to use lines that hold as little water as posible. I use tuf-line religiously throughout the year but I have started to use some other braids for late season fishing simply to reduce the amount of water being thrown around which helps my rods and also my hands.

Posts: 4343 Location: Smith Creek | You got me. I really had to use my imagination to come up with a reason not swirl my rod in the water to remove ice. Why would most people respond with Pam or some kind of Petroleum product when there's a whole lake available?
