Subject: which navionics card do I need?

For my next trip to LOTW I really need the best navionics card for my GPS. What's the best card for the region of stevensbay, stoneybay and Kakagi crow lake? I am planning a trip for 2010.

I am from Europe, so sorry if my english is a bit bad.

Thanks,

Mark

I have a Navionics LOTW card and it covers the entire lake. Cannot recall exactly which card. Unfortunately, it is not accurate and is way off in one particular direction. In fact, it shows you going over land and reefs when you are 20 feet away from land and reefs (!) Further, if you think you are 20 feet away from a barely submerged reef, be careful, you just might smack it. Otherwise, if you go with a generous "buffer" the map is fairly detailed.

Lakemaster makes a much more detailed LOTW map which shows Stevens, Sabaskong, etc, but I don't think it shows Kakagi/Crow lake... yet.

Anyhow, not really an answer to your question, more of a "caution" and a heads up. If you don't hear anything on the board, send an email to Navionics and they'll give you an answer.

You'll need the Navionics Canada chip.

there is no card that has any mapping of Kakagi. You get an outline of the half closest to LOW, showing a few of the islands, but the Eastern half is barren. If you want the whole lake outlined, then you will need to buy the Freedom Maps for that province.

And the Navionics North card has the same info for LOW as the Canada chip and you get the benefit of having MN, Wi, MI, IA, ND, SD on the chip as well. You get part of the lake down to 1ft and the other is Canadian Hydrographic. Try to wait as late as you can before buying the card too as they are updating their cards thru out the year.

Q.>I can no longer find Navionics' LOTW (Lake of the Woods) map, where did it go?
A: Navionics has incorporated its HotMaps LOTW edition lake maps into its new 2009 editions of HotMaps Premium (North region) and HotMaps Platinum (Region #2). What's better, the data for LOTW was further enhanced with more detail. The 2009 editions of HotMaps include thousands of additional lakes including hundreds of new HD (High-Definition) lake maps created by Navionics own US survey team.

I found this on the navionics site. But i 'still dont understand wich card i should buy. Can anyone tell me the cardnumber?

What sonar/gps are you looking to use this for? If you have a humminbird they are releasing programming to use Lakemaster chips this month.

Lakemaster can run in pretty much any locator and handheld. Really the detail is much better...

If you are only needing LOTW....

I believe you have to purchase a Lakemasters for a Hummigbird product. I think they only work in Hummingbirds. Here is a link.
http://www.lakemap.com/humminbirddigitalgpsfishingmapcards.aspx
another link of units for compatability. Looks like only 700, 800, 900, and 1100 series are compatable.

Does anyone know if the lakemaster chip is accurate with your location, I've noticed the same thing with the navionics being way off and it shows you driving over islands all the time.

crackpot, it depends if the lake you are fishing is high defenition with either lakemaster or navionics. The HD maps have been mapped independently by the two companies and are therefore more accurate. If it is just a standard map then they can be off due to errors in the map when it was first created by the DNR. When DNR maps are put onto chips there are already several sources of error from the original DNR map add to that some error in your GPS and it may look like you are on islands. When in fact you are not. So the problem is not neccisarily the fault of Lakemaster or Navionics, but are multi faceted errors that build up through the process of trying to digitize old DNR maps onto modern GPS coordinates.

If you are on islands on a HD map it probably means someone screwed up when they were doing the survey. Or there is an issue with your GPS accuracy. Remember that when your gps shows an error of 20 ft (or whatever it may be) that is +/- 20 ft. So in theory you create a waypoint it could end up on one end of the error when you come back to fish your boat could be on the other end of the error for a total of 40 fist error. Although it is pretty unlikey that this would occur.

Mark you may be out of luck with the LX19, but I don't know for sure.

Hello Plunker,

since the humminbird is mounted on my boat in Europe, taking the lx19 with me would be far more easy to to then taking the humminbird (with sensors) of my boat for a 3 weak fishing trip to LOTW.

So I am now still in search of the best navionics map there is for my Lowrance LX19.

What navionics card would you recommend me then, so I can order it somewhere in time?

Ya, I would go with lakemaster. Especially since they added varying color to their maps. The single color they used for contours before made it very tough to read.

i have the navionics north and it wasn't that good around the sabeskong bay area. was ok i just wouldn't trust it without watching your depth. seemed to work better on the northern part of LOTW than sabeskong area. like one said above, it has MN, WI and a few other states on it. unfortunately, LOTW is the only canadian lake on there. had to borrow the canada navionics chip (not sure which one) for eagle lake. that was ok too. heard some say the lakemaster was better some say they aren't, i don't think either is better for eagle. good to have a paper map too. i know crow lake (think that is what you asked) wasn't on my navionics north as i was going to fish it. I have yet to find too many chips that are that good (navionics, lowrance preloaded, hotspots, lakemaster) as far as accuracy but they are nice to have on the bigger lakes and to mark up on your own.
