I make my own with plaster. Real easy.

1) Cover the swimbait with a light coating of Vaseline and also the box
2) Take the swimbait (no treble hooks) and place it in a box mid level with the bottom of the swimbait against the box. Try to pop the hook hangers through the box and tie them to keep the lure tight against the box wall.
3) make up some plaster and pour under and up to half way on the lure (midline)
4) Let it dry overnight.
5) cover the hard plaster with a light layer of Vaseline
6) pour new plaster and fill the box and let dry
7) very carfully remove the cardboard box by rippign at away from your new mold.
8) Take a knife or screw driver and separate the two mold halves.
9) Remove your lure and walla! You have a mold.
10) Just take old harnesses and place them into the mold and the old hook area will hold your harness in place.
11) Rubber band the two halves together and make up some plastisol and pour it in.
12) Let it dry (10-20 minutes) and remove it and you have yourself a new swimbait.

You may need to drill a few air holes for the tail area-you can see mine in the picture below of my SuperD I did a while back. I made a double mold for my Mag and Regular. Not perfect but they work fine in the water and the musky and pike don't seem to care about the small imperfections. Just my wife hates the smell of plastisol. Do it outside or in your garage in a well ventilated area. I use a gas mask when I heat up plastisol. Nasty stuff when its 350F!!!! Lure Craft has all you need for plastisol and coloring. Fun to do when you can't fish too plus it recycles your old harnesses you paid so much for. If you have old harnesses that do not have a coil in them try to solder a small coil into it before you make your swimbait. It will extend the life of your new lure and it won't fall a part on you.

James-

Couldn't help noticing a slight omission at about step 9... coating the plaster with something before you pour the plastisol (I think this is your same great tutorial from before?). Not sure what others use for this, but I've started coating my molds with a product called 'Porc-a-fix' that's located in the glue/epoxy section of my local Home Depot. The porc-a-fix will hold up to the heat of 350 degree plastic, adheres well to the plaster, and makes it really easy to remove the poured plastic from the mold. To make it a little easier, I brush on some lure scent oil... just greases the mold a little bit. And after I take the plastic out of the mold, I drop it in a cold water bath. Hardens the plastic up in a hurry!

OH-sorry about the coating!!! I used a very light coating of epoxy then greased it with a very light coat of Vaseline. I am sure a lot of stuff would work well. I will dig up some of my "creations" later and take some pictures. I used them mostly to make color prototypes and just to see if I could make a home made mold too.

James ,

I have made some one part molds with two tails going to the sides instead of up and down. So, I was messing with a mold last night and at step three......filling the box halfway up the bait and it gets tricky with the tail. It wantsa to sink into the p.o.p. Any tricks there are just make a thicker mix. Thanks for the help too. It's very cool for someone who sells baits to help others out.

Thanks,
Dinver

I just filled up the mold half way and then pushed the tail into the plaster. That was how I did it. As for cracks, I have not had any yet. I am guessing its the consistency and quality of plaster you use. Just follow the direction with water to powder and it should be ok.
