I am currently looking at a boat that has this engine in model year 04. I have not had any experience with this brand, so I was wondering if any of you could share your experience or knowledge about these, whethere it be good or bad. The motor has around 50 hours on it...

Thanks,

Craig R.

I owned the 150 and loved it. Suzuki makes great motors.

I really like my Suzi DF 70, the only way I'd not get a Suzi, is If I decided to hang a 4 stroke kicker as well, then I'd have to have a Opti Pro XS. The Suzi is good from 300 rpm's all the way up to 5800. Rock Solid.

I have a 2003, Suzuki DF140 on my 17'7" HYDRA-SPORT Guide boat, and guided out of it for 5 years here on Cave Run lake year round. I retired from guiding 2 years ago but still put many hrs. on it runing it year round. Suzuki motors made them for Evinrude motors till Evinrude closed down in 2000. Evinrude just put their name on them and sold them as Evinrude 4Cl motors. I have had no problems with this motor since buying it new. I have Guided in snowstroms here on Cave Run and had all our reals freeze up and the SUZY started right up evertime. See if you can take it for a ride on a lake to see if you like it, and have a marine dealer check it out for you. The DF140 runs my boat at 48 mph. with 30% less gas then my 2cl. did. good luck Marv.

I have a 2005 140 johnson which is the same as suzuki (built by the same company just a different name on the motor). I have it on a 18 foot lund fisherman. I have about 5 or 6 hundred hours on it and not a hiicup or anything as far as the mechanics its been sound for me. But power wise I wish I could have went up to a 175 it seems a little underpower. I've talk to other people that run a suzuki or jonzukis and the only thing I heard was the trim switch had a recall on it. It was running to many amps and was burning up the switch on the throttle, I never had that problem so I couldn't tell ya for sure if it was a particular year or what. This fall when I took my boat in to get winterize I was talking to one of the mechanics about my motor and he said that the only difference between 115 and 140 was the gear ratio other wise they were the same motor. Overall I am please with this motor its reliable and thats the most important thing, good luck with your decision.

The 140 is a very dependable motor but it is under the 140 rating. I've even heard that it's closer to 125 then 140. If the boat is borderline with a 140hp and you like to load it up or do a lot of tubing/skiing you may have to invest in another prop for those applications.

That being said the dependability of the 115/140 (same block) is impressive. I heard of one motor that Frankies got in on trade with 3000 hours on it and still was running well. They sold it to a guy with whom they disclosed the hours to and last checked it was still going. That was 4 years ago.

I've been running one for the last two seasons, Good mileage, Really quite, trolls down to 2 MPH. Always starts. No mech. proplems. It is alittle slower than I thought it should be, 43 MPH in a Tuffy 1760 but I am running a four blade prop for hole shot...Over all I like it.

I've got the 2004 DF90. The DF90/115/140 all share the same engine block. I believe that the DF140 has some more extensive upgrades to get the the extra power. As far as issues, I have had none. Great runner in all conditions. This motor starts on the first crank regardless of weather (including freezing conditions). Only exception would be if the fuel bulb is not pumped up.

As far as power, I have been impressed. I am running this on a 1750 Crestliner Fishhawk and get 38.5 to 40.0 GPS on the stock propeller. It really gets up out of the hole nicely. I think that some credit goes to the dealer in that they knew exactly where to mount the motor (middle hole) to get good performance.

Yake - Quick question for you: what is your prop size?

I have the same set up as you, 90hp Suzuki hanging on a 1750 Fish Hawk. My prop is a 13 1/4 x 19 and my top end speed is 35 with a Hustler aluminum 3 spoke.

I can increase my pitch some as I am not at WOT when I hit the max rpm of 5,500 so I know I have some top end speed available to me.

As for the motor, I've had it four years and it's been flawless. Suzuki for life.

Thanks for the input guys...I will be taking this boat for a test ride on Wednesday. The set up is a Crestliner 1850 muskie edition Fishhawk w/ that 140 Suzuki. I am looking forward to it, as I am pretty sure I will like the set up...Do any of you have this setup or know someone that does, so you can comment on what I should expect for performance?

Thanks,
Craig

I have the Johnson which is the same as the 2003 Suzuki and love the engine. Never had a problem. Turn the key and go. The gas mileage is fantastic as well and its trolling ability.

Mruz,

How low can you get it to troll down to? I got to test drive this setup I mentioned above yesterday, and the motor ran great. I was impressed. I put an offer to the owner so I am just waiting to hear back from him now.

Topwalker, I have that same setup also and have tried lots of props. The two best ones for top speed that I have found are:

14x21 Suzuki 3 blade aluminum
PA1-1421 Turning Point SS

If you have any other questions on this setup feel free to drop me a PM or email

I have the stock 14x19" three blade aluminum prop. My rpms go a little higher than recommended, probably 5600 or 5700. I have thought about getting the 14x21 but I have always liked the way my current setup gets up out of the hole.

kjgmh, what are you getting for top speed on your 14x21?

Sorry didn't see this until now. It will troll down about .7/,8 mph.

Always starts right up and runs smooth. Yes I wish I had a 90 on the boat, but the 60 does everything it is asked to do.

The prop is important though in terms of what ptich size is on it. We found the boat took for ever to plane out and until we changed out the prop and it planes out quickly now.

YAKE BAIT - - - Check your owners manual, my 2003 DF 140 calls for 5600 RPM'S to 6200 RPM'S top speed. I run mine at 6000 RPM'S all the time as I seem to get better Gas mileage then at 6200 RPM'S my dealer says to run it flat out at 6200 but I get a little nervous running it at that speed I have run it up to 6300 RPM'S before it gave me a red light. With my standard from the factory SS 14x21 I get 50 mph. on a good day with just me in the boat at 6000 RPM'S I can get 52MPH at 6200 RPM'S but I dont like to push it. This set up gets me out of the hole like right now. I do run a glass boat that is fast so that helps. I would like to put a 150 Evenrude E-TEC on it just to see how fast it can go. Marv.

Whiskers,

I apologize for the confusion, my setup is on a DF90, not DF140. The DF90 manual calls for a 4500 to 5500 full throttle operating range. I do not get an rpm light at any time but I am definitely a little above the recommended range. I guess that I do not get too worried about it knowing the motor is allowed to run to 6000 rpm when rigged and programmed as a 115 hp model.

I have an 05 Suzuki 140 and it's a great motor, not one problem of any kind with it. Runs so quiet that I sometimes need to look back to see if it is peeing to find out if it's running or not.
