Posts: 433 Location: Cedarburg, Wisconsin | I've seen a few mounts displayed in public places over the years that just looked off. Some were completely bogus, and others were close but something was just not right. I looked at the Cal Johnson fish pictures on the WRMA site and the "fresh" fish looked pretty darn impressive, especially the width of the body at the tail fin. Don't know how big it actually was, but I sure would be happy just to see a fish like that let alone catch one. But the mount looks strange, as it has a different ratio of distances between the fins than the fish in the picture. Seems the pelvic fins are farther forward, or the tail section has gotten longer. Not being a taxidermist, or having any knowledge of the difficulties of mounting a fish correctly, I was wondering if this is a typical problem having the skin stretch disproportionately, or if the pose of the fish shifts the fins relative to each other, or whether this was done to enhance the mount? Any taxidermists out there that can shed some light on this, please do so.

Posts: 1296 Location: Hayward, Wisconsin | Almost: You've "almost" got it. There is NO QUESTION that the mount has been "enhanced". If you look close at the mount, you can see a crack above the back paired fins where another piece of skin has been added to make the fish reach the "claimed" length dimension. You are right on target about the distance between the rear paired fins and the anal fin being "off"...by "at least" 6 inches. Once one knows what to look for, it becomes obvious what was done. First off I cant belive that I am responding to A post in witch I feel that most people on here hate me and my career. Yes I do lots of replicas, but my passion is skin mounting REAL fish. To your question When you preserve a skin weather it be borax, alcohol/water, or tanning methed. It tightens and firms the skin. And yes on the Esox strain you can stretch the skin a little out of proportin but not much. And when you leangthen the skin you will lose girth and visa versa. I have never seen the mount in question to see if the incision seam fits. But I could care less about it! I would rather mount a little girls first fish, now there's a true trophy! I hope this helped you. Happy holiday.
