| Zach:
I do believe that new and full moon periods are the best times to be fishing, regardless of the weather conditions providing it isn't in the middle of a lightening storm.
I can't actually say that I've done sufficient research to indicate whether the new moon or the full moon pahase is best either for numbers or sizes.
I, for one, do plan trips around the moon phases. Case in point; I have a guided trip booked in Vilas County for the full moon period next week. And a night-time trip at that.
If I could pick the weather conditions to coincide with the moon phnase for a particular trip, I would opt for cloudy overcast (even light drizzle) combined with slight to moderate winds.
Oldtime (even some newer and present time) farmers often planted crops per moon phases and insisted that it did definitely make a difference. Supposedly due the the expansion and contraction of the earth at those times. We know tides are affected by the moon phases and it just seems logical to me that moon phases would also play a role in animal behavior too. I don't really have any scientific proof or collected data to substantiate all this, but do know I, for one, have caught some of my better fish (all species, not just muskies) during prime moon phase periods.
I don't believe it to be either coincidence or superstition that moon phases plan an important (very important) role is the scheme of things when fishing.
