Location: Cedarburg, Wisconsin | The cause of the insulation melting down is extreme heat that can only be generated by current flowing across a resistance, probably a poor connection on the clip. This would cause a voltage drop the motor would see and the result would be very little power available to spin the prop. All your power is turning into heat.
Two possibilities come to mind. One, the most likely, is the clip, which should be easy to spot. Corrosion, or broken wire strands, or a sloppy crimp on the clip would do it. The second possibility is a little harder to figure out. If the motor is drawing excessive current do to a malfunction, the extra current would generate the most heat in the weakest connection, again the clip. While the clip may be within mfg. specs, if it is the weak link it will generate the most heat.
I hope you are properly fused, either with a regular inline fuse or a circuit breaker. If it is fused and the fuse doesn't open, you can be pretty sure there is not excessive current draw. That would be another indicator the clip has a bad connection and the motor is OK. |
