Location: Minneapolis, MN | I'll be the first to admit I don't know how to properly maintain my reels. I have heard from some techs that people like me are typically oiling the wrong parts. Has anyone tried any instructional videos to learn proper maintenance? I am considering the video in the link below. Any coments are welcome. http://www.lakeforktacklerepair.com/tips.htm

Posts: 582 | Its really not needed once you do one. It's pretty simple. Take off the side plate, clean and lube. There isn't much too it.

Posts: 126 | I'm in the same boat as far as feeling like I'm not sure how to properly maintain a reel. If anyone has any info they can post to help it would be much appreciated. I really appreciate those coupons for free cleaning that came with the calcutta te but I will run out of them eventually.

Posts: 1270 | Don't over think cleanign and lubing your reels. Oil the bearings and the worm gear and grease (sparingly) the main and cog gear. As for takingthem apart just go ahead and try it. What's the worst that can happen? You can't figure out how to put it bcak together nad have to send it away, you would have sent it away anyway. It's really not that hard. With digital cameras just take a lot of pictures as you take it apart so you can look back when you put it back together.

Posts: 8780 | What I have always done when taking apart my reels is line up the parts in the order you took them off, facing the direction they were when you took them off. I'll then clean them in that order and put them right back where I got them. (dish soap and a toothbrush works well) Then when you reassemble it there's no guessing what goes next. There really isn't a lot to a reel, and if you have the schematic that came with it (you can find them on-line of you do not) it's pretty simple to get them back together right. Some general advice: 1. Pay attention to what you are doing. When you take apart the drag washers for example, watch how they go together, and in what order. 2. Everything that moves and doesn't have teeth gets oiled. Just a drop. There's no need to oil the crap out of it. 3. If its got teeth, grease it lightly. LIGHTLY. Any extra grease will wind up everywhere. 4. Do not oil the drag washers. They should be dry and clean. 5. When you take off the handle, be careful removing the e clip and putting it back on. It's best to use a small screwdriver, and cover it with your hand so when it goes flying it won't get lost. It does go flying! 6. A little lock-tite on the sideplate and frame screws will keep them from coming loose 7. No need to crank down on the side plate screws, frame screws, handle nut, etc. Tighten them, but don't go crazy. Reelman, the digital camera idea is awesome! That's pretty much idiot proof.
