Muskie Fishing -> General Discussion -> reel question

my shimano calcutta 251 made so much noise when casting that I was almost deaf when I stopped fishing with it. It was like a truck put in its first gear on a mountain road: sometimes I even wondered how long it would take before it fell apart into a million pieces. But it works ok, smooth drag, ... only the noise (and sometimes I hear a grinding noise when I retrieve as well) bothered me. Do any of you guys know what this is? I want to fix it because it's annoying and this reel costs too much money to get a new one

Have you tried oiling the bearings?

I used WD 40 on it, which is used for oiling car engines as well, and bycicle chains, ...

Where do you suggest I put the oil then? I mean on which parts when I disassemble it?

WD40 is fairly disasterous on reels. It contains some substances which seem to varnish the bearings and can quickly cause the noise and lumpyness you described. You might be lucky, if you strip the reels down and give all the ball bearings a soak in liquid lighter fuel or brake cleaner, then re oil them with a proper reel oil, like rocket fuel or a good quality automatic transmission oil, which is very similar. If that doesn't cure the problem you will probably have to replace the bearings. Guess how I learnt all this? Hmmmm.!
