I started ripping 10" Jakes this year and I am looking at getting a new rod for this application. I am using an 8" Tica right now, but am getting very fatigued and tired by the end of a long day of doing this. I am leaning toward the new 9'3"XH Okuma, but was looking for opinions. This rod will also be used for big blades and big plastics as well.

Location: Chicago, IL | for what it is worth i am using the okuma 9'3"xh for ripping 8" & 10" slammers use it for 14" jakes and 13" grannies too coupled with a high gear ratio reel i can rip pretty much all day long without being all beat up my aleve intake has gone down since using the okuma then again you younger guys probably don't have to worry about that too much PS- it works great for big plastics too: suzies, mag dawgs, twisted tubes, etc Edited by Lakeshore Lure Co. 10/15/2009 12:17 PM

Location: Des Moines IA | The 9'3 XH is a perfect fit for this application. I have ripped 9 and 13 inch grannies, 10 inch jakes, and it also is a great pounder, and Double 10 rod. I have a 7000 on it and that combo works real well.

I don’t care what anyone else thinks. The Lami will not only allow you to work the baits well, but load up great for casting and keep a great flex in the rod for fighting. You could use a 6’ broom handle and work a large minnowbait great with it, but keeping a fish on with that same broom handle is a different story. Look for a rod that gives you more than just the ability to jerk that bait.

Like CiscoKid said, loads up great for casting, which will take away alot of the pain from ripping all day. Regardless of what blank you choose, I believe the longer length is what's key. Chas

How will the 9' Lamiglas handle the Blades and the Plastics?

the lamiglass 9'0 was designed for trolling is isn't $150 better than an okuma either same warranties too look at musky armor, tackle booty's, musky innovations and musky mayhem rods too you could also go custom for about the same price as the lamiglass

Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | I've fallen in love with the new Tooth Tamer 8'6" X-HVY rod for this application. I was lucky enough to fish with the prototype this summer, and we've made a few changes to it for 2010 which I am sure you will really like. I love ripping 10" Jakes, and this is a well suited rod for it. Not too shabby for tossing big blades either, really loads em' up!

Posts: 1906 Location: Oconto Falls, WI | Rodney, the 9’ Lami wasn’t exactly designed for trolling. The guy that got the ball rolling on that rod was Rick Meverden (sp?) got rest his soul. A few of us got to cast with the proto and really liked it. Pretty sure that rod had more casting hours on it than trolling. Beside who cares if it was “designed” for one application if it fits another so well. I use the 9’ for blades and big plastics although I will say for big blades it isn’t my rod of choice. For the big rubber/lumber though it is in my hands everytime. Throws pounders well.

Not bashing or complaining just putting my thoughts on buying a rod just for ripping big cranks, I have 3 okuma's and one does comes loose quite often, I have a 8'6 st croix and a 8' gander mt rod that I use for ripping baits, and I prefer those rods.

Hey Travis, I was looking through old threads and I get the idea that you are good at weighting 10" Jakes. Would you mind sharing a tip or two with me? I would really appreciate it. Thanks! [email protected]

Posts: 443 Location: Indiana | St. Croix. PM86XHF!! This is my new favorite all around rod. The more baits I throw with it, the more I like it. It is quickly becoming my go to rod. I was ripping Jakes this weekend and loved it. I did have it custom built with fat cork and weight balanced it. That is important as it is a little heavier of a rod.
