so I am planning on heading to vermilion for a fall trophy hunt over the weekend of november 14-15 and was curious if anyone knew when vermilion typically ices up. I have heard a few things being anywhere from the third weekend to sometime during the third week of november is typical. just curious if anyone could shed some light on the subject as fall is rapidly approaching, according to the calender, already here.

thanks,
Big Perc

My guess is - the day before you get there! Just kidding. You will be able to find open water somewhere to fish muskies.

I might move it up a week for dependable open water at that lattitude. Every year is generally NOT average.

It would have to be awfully cold and definitely calm for that lake to freeze over by mid november. It is possible, but with the way our fall seasons have been in the past, I wouldn't expect the water to be frozen over....although I would plan on maybe a slippery access or two.

On a lake of that size, some small bays might freeze up, but with any sort of wind, it will all be broken up...

I'd say you should be fine...

By comparison Milacs accesses froze up on the 19th last year and on the 27th in 2008. If you call John at Retreat Lodge he may have some more insight for you.

Just a heads up. We had a trip up there were the lake froze on November 7th about 5 or 6 years ago. The wind layed down, the temp dropped to -10 over night and she was locked up everywhere the next morning. You never know what mother nature is going to throw your way. Last year we fished it on November 20th with no problem. Good luck and be sure to bring everything you can imagine to break and melt ice and thaw your boat out.

Yup. See my post above. When it can start snowing and sticking in KY before Halloween, it can freeze the lakes in MN by mid November.

The mojority of years some guys are walking out and ice fishing on Thanksgiving in front of McKinley Park. Deer season here is usually the first weekend in Nov. I've seen it -21 and also 70 so kind of hard to predict. Sept was way above normal. The past two weeks have been around -25 degrees below normal so if that persists I could see ice up my early to mid Nov. If your coming in Nov better bring a chisel to help break ice at the landings. Small bays and bigger shallow bays like Pike, Everett, etc could be iced in. Then again it could be sunny and 70....

Landed at the casino the other day and the bay's temp was around 51 while the main lake ranged from 57-58 so you can see the difference. Like others stated the bays will freeze much sooner making it difficult to land and get out. Its a gamble getting that late in the year with so many factors involved. Might get out one day but next morning be screwed...
