Tying bucktails, I tie on a coil, but I see skirt collars in the tackle catalogs and I even see a local lure maker using them. I'm tie locally for customers and two bait shops, and of course always looking for ways to streamline and thus speed up production. I've got to imagine that laying some Flashabou on a collar and throwing on a zip tie has got to be faster than my tying them to a coil.

But is this an acceptable means of doing it? I notice they're not listed in alot of the catalogs' "muskie" section, and I don't see many guys on here talking about them.

So are they suitable for muskie-worthy bucktails? Drawbacks?

Esoxfly,

I tie my own bucktails for musky fishing and i use coils with hair, but mostly flashabu and I tie with nylon thread and then i cement it and zip tie it. i have pounded my bucktails and never had any come apart. I have thought about just using a zip tie but I do have concerns about how long term it would hold up. I can tie several large skirts in an hour and I am by no means fast.

Just my opinion, hope it helps

RM,
I use lawn mower throtttle cable. You can get it at Home depot for about $5. Just pull the wire out of the center and cut the coil into ~1 inch chunks!

the skirt collars work for tying flashabou. you can tie them with thread, but need to devise a way to keep them from spinning while doing it. I use a piece of kinked wire jammed into them held by a fly tieing vise. they look really sharp when done. I would NEVER use a zip tie on a bucktail! you may as well use duct tape! If you want to build your own lures, do it right, and don't cut corners. you can buy plenty of junk already.

I saw bucktails tied with a zip tie that were made with flashabou at a local baitshop last month. I figured that the flash wouldnt be held in place by the zip tie so I went over and tugged a little on the flash..... Sure enough it slipped and the flashabou ended up on the floor.. ooooppps. so it does not work.

i use skirt collars for tying flashabou[the ones that look like the michelin man] and they work/look great. i use 80lb power pro line to tie with as there is no way any fishes teeth are going to sever that stuff.i put one end of the collar in a 6" vise to hold it.then go around the flashabou 5 pretty loose wraps. now lay in a loop to finish with, do 5 more loose wraps over the loop and flashabou.then cut the 80 leaving a 4" tag end.pull the tag thru with the loop completing a whip knot.now go and distribute the bou evenly around the collar then pull the 80 tight with a pliers and cut the tag off. seal with clear fingernail polish,it ain't goin' nowhere!have NEVER had one of these skirts come loose.i've sold a bunch plus use them myself all the time and haven't had ANY complaints.

I like to tie on a coil instead of using zip ties because I think that it holds better and is more durable. You can add some head cement or epoxy....whatever...to make the dressing more durable, you can't do that with a zip tie. I used a few zip ties on some lures that I made for a guy who was going to Canada on a pike trip. When he came home there wasn't much Flashabou left on the zip tie models. That was enough to convince me. I tie for myself, and I think the coils give you a better hold no matter what type of hair or synthetic material you are using.

Never thought of tying with superline, but I think that I will. I throw away enough used line every year, I might as well put it to good use.

I forgot I started this thread!

You guys confirmed what I've been thinking, in that the zip ties are not the way to do things, and I haven't used them. I tie every coil, and then seal it with silicone, and customers like them that way. I market my buctails as "bombproof" and that's the comment I've gotten the most is how well and heavily they're made. That's what I'm shooting for, so I'll stick with it and leave the zip ties to my competitor.

Go to your local bike shop and try a handful of bycycle spoke nipples. These will give your hair a natural flare when tied on the tapered end. Been doing this for years. Most bike shops just throw out all the used spokes and nipples for liability reasons and I get mine for free.

Geez, this is why I read these posts! My "real" job is that I'm a bike mechanic here in Bemidji! I NEVER thought of this! and I have an unlimited supply. Its true, during the summer we probably recycle at least a dozen wheels a week, and most of them have 36 spokes. Do the math, lots of free parts. Plus, if you want to get fancy, I can get you anodized colored spoke nipples. not free, but really cool.

I gotta try tying on these things!

I tie all of my tails (flash or marabou) with nylon thread (I like the idea of using my old super braid). For the flashabou I will put a wide zip tie over the sealed thread wraps to act as a flac jacket. I've had some of my baits that have seen some battles show wear and tear on the wraps and the zip tie "vest" really helps.
