Posts: 194 | I have an early 70's model Abu 6500 C3. The handle that I bought it with has broken. Every replacement handle I've found and tried is too thick and the retention nut won't catch enough thread to stay on. Anyone know where to find a slightly thinner handle for this reel? or other suggestions? Thanks

Posts: 1270 | Take a blade style drill bit the right diameter to have the nut fit in it and make the area around the drive shaft hole a little thinner. If you try to tighten the nut down with only a thread or two it will strip out.

Posts: 194 | Thanks Reelman Jay, that reel is awesome. I don't care how old it is. It's one of my best reels.

I have knocked the nuts off two abus. I have replced it with this handle, now being nutless, there are no more issues with the handle. http://www.muskyshop.com/modules/cart/products.php/keys/gator+g...

Posts: 194 | ToddM, How does that thing work nutless? I don't see it being marketed that way.

Yes sir, they are in a paperweight on my ex-wife's mantle! The actual handle threads on to the reel. A star washer goes on over that to keep it from moving, then a cap that snaps on. The grips feel and are very loose but you get used to it quick. I twitch big crankbaits and jerkbaits and I have basically ripped the handles off two reels and just about every grip on the standard handles.
