36 Anglers will hit the water Saturday morning under near perfect conditions. The weather tomorrow is calling for temps to be near 80 degrees, with winds out of the South to Southwest at 10 to 15. No precipitation is forecast and if the temps hit 80, it will be one of the warmest days of the Summer on Vermilion.

Guide Matt Snyder said he's finding fish on all the structural elements, and that they are not scattered in the water column as they were when water temps were cooler just a few days back. Surface temps on Vermilion are the warmest consistent temperatures seen so far this year at a time when the big Lake should be cooling down as the fish move to early Fall locations. Instead, it's a Summer bite...all the way, and Matt is confident as he heads out tomorrow competing against a very talented field.

Updates will be posted immediately as fish are called in the MAC HQ during the event. The MAC is a total CPR event, allowing the anglers to catch, photograph, and release muskies with no holding them boatside or transporting them to another location for registration. Anglers use a MAC Muskie Bumper measuring board to take digital image measurements, call the fish in to Judges immediately, and confirm it with imagery at the end of the day during a live virtual weigh in. As a result, MAC Teams can register any fish from the tournament legal 40" size up, and since immediate release is achieved, are able to legally continue fishing. CPR Muskie tournaments were pioneered by Paul Hartman, Co- Tournament Director for the MAC.

VIDEO: http://muskie.outdoorsfirst.com/watch.asp?id=1938

The Vermilion field of contestants will be fishing for a first place of $5100.00, and up to $6600.00 with contingencies from MAC sponsor Tuffy Boats. The top finishing team running a Tuffy is guaranteed at least $1500. 40 anglers are registered for the event, but two teams were unable to attend.

Morning images, interviews, and more will be up by about 8 AM Saturday. A live update and weigh in brought to you by Spring Bay Resort, The Landing, and Tuffy Boats is planned for about 5:15 PM Saturday evening, watch for details here!

The Muskie Anglers Circuit field headed out on Vermilion this morning under partly cloudy skies and temps in the low 50's. The high temp today is forecast to be near 80 with winds out of the South at 10 to 15. The Anglers all felt the wind would help, and it's been calm and sunny here for days during the prefish.

The field left The Landing at 7 Am this morning, and will return at 4 PM. There's no need to check in earlier than 4 PM because all fish are called in and verified by CPR imagery, so the entire field fishes 9 hours today.

The fish have been moving, but hard to get to commit, according to the morning interviews today. There's lots of big girls showing themselves; the challenge is getting them to convert!

Updates will be added as the day progresses, and the virtual weigh in will begin at about 5:15 this evening.

If a fish is caught, the update is immediate. No fish so far, lots of action reported but no takers.

The fishing is over for the day and I see no results posted here. It must be correct, then, there were zero fish caught today?

Absolutely correct, no fish caught. A lot of people moving fish, a lot of fish being seen and fish are being seen everyone. One team even saw 30 fish, just no takers. At the end of the day, the consensus was that the fish are priming up and towards the end of the day, quite a few of the anglers had really active fish that turned on.

Too much pressure.  Those fish have lures zinging by them all day and every day.  They've seen a million lures.

At a cast per minute, and 36 fishermen at 9 hrs each, this equals 0 fish in 19,440 casts. It's a tough sport, for sure.

Tough sport for sure I'll agree with that take 100%. Guys will argue all day long that some guys are more skilled than others but over the long haul it's a numbers game and I'll simply take whoever makes the most casts or has their lure in the water the longest and I'll give you the "best" team.

The bite today on Vermilion was hard to describe; it was both incredible and tough, exciting and frustrating. Some teams reported seeing as many as 30 fish, and everyone moved fish they thought they could catch. Seeing a few fish a day over 50" helps some when the bite is off, but doing everything one can think of to get one....just one... to commit is pretty interesting work.

The weather looks stable, but a front is moving through the area bringing a cool down. Winds tomorrow in advance of the front are to be South 5 MPH increasing to 15 by afternoon. There were alot of big muskies spotted today, and the field will be after them early.

Watch for the morning reports to be posted early tomorrow with interviews and images from the morning ceremonies.

The weather today looks a little better than the bluebird skies and calm winds of the prefish and early day one. Winds are to go to the S/SW at 10 to 15, exactly what the teams are looking for if they can't count on any cloud cover.

Tactics and techniques are going to be refined today working the fish spotted yesterday. Watch for reports as the day progresses, and join us for the live weigh in this afternoon at about 4:30 this afternoon.

So far, no fish have been called in. Conditions have been excellent today, with 10 to 15 MPH winds and broken but strong cloud cover. Three hours to go!

The winds have been picking up all afternoon, and have been 10 to 15 for quite a while on the water. Josh Borovsky and Adam Greengard just called a 45" muskie in to MAC Co-Director Paul Hartman.

Josh Borovsky and Adam Greengard's 45 1/4 with under a hour to go sealed the deal for the win at the 2009 Lake Vermilion MAC. They cashed a check for $5100. Mike Winther and Jerome Morris took second place for $3000 by drawing. Rick Rosar and Jeff Chastek took third place for $1500.

Several of the anglers reported losing fish today while others fished hard all day without seeing a Muskie. Watch for video, images and a full wrap up soon!

A note from the Muskie Anglers Circuit Master of Ceremonies and new PR man, Jim Kalkofen. Jim has run countless competitive angling events over the last three decades for Mercury and Then In Fisherman as the Executive Director of the In Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail, and recently the Teen Challenge up in Brainerd, MN. Jim's experience will be valuable for the MAC into the future!

"Steve, I had fun with the muskie “nuts.” With the CPR format, great future sites and dates, I see nothing but growth for the circuit. I like the idea of Paul and you serving as co-directors. That way, all questions can be answered promptly and from the “horse’s mouth.” The contestants were every bit as dedicated and serious about their game as other professional anglers I’ve dealt with over my career. From the interviews on stage, it amazes me how knowledgeable the guys are and how they are willing to share it with your audience.

The more they help teach others, the more popular they will become. This is definitely the place to be if any angler wants to make it to the “Big Time” in the Muskie World. Thanks for allowing me the opportunity to meet them and see what makes them tick. When you and I fished some muskie tournaments way back in the late 1970’s, I always thought it was the lunch that was most important. Today, I would have a different opinion. Please thank the contestants for me. I look forward to next season and the thrills it will bring.

Jim Kalkofen
