Posts: 134 Location: East TN | So i've been needing to buy me some replacement hooks to keep in my tackle bag. What size(s) do most of you guys find is the most common sizes with musky baits? Just looking to buy maybe 2-3 different sizes to keep on hand. Here are a few baits I throw fairly regularly... 8" Jake Hellhound 8" Believer(jointed) Bulldawg(regular size) Shallow Invader If you guys were to buy 2-3 sizes of replacement hooks for these, what sizes would you buy? Some that are typically found in stores(Eagle Claw preferably).

Posts: 496 Location: midwest | Buy eagle claw 774's in 3/0,4/0 and 5/0's. I find myself using the 5/0 most often if they don't tangle with each other and don't affect the baits action.

Posts: 621 Location: Seymour, WI | What kind of hooks are on the new MI Pro Dawgs? I've never seen hooks that sharp right out of the package before.

who cares how sharp they are right out of the package...all hooks need to be sharpened, and sharpened often. Mustad hooks are DULL as can be out of the box, yet are still one of my favorite hooks of all time. SHARPEN your hooks.

Posts: 621 Location: Seymour, WI | I bought a mag pro dawg at the New London show this yr and the hooks on that bait are scary sharp. They're like needles. I don't think anyone could sharpen them any more than they already are and I sharpen hooks all the time. That's why I want to know what hooks they're using. I'd like to be able to buy them like that. Posts: 335 Location: Minnesota | Good hooks shouldn't need to be sharpened out of the box IMO. I pretty much use Eagle Claw Lazer sharps - they are the sharpest hook I have found. The only bad thing about them is they don't come larger than 5/0. I still use the 2 chainsaw files side by side to sharpen. I am pretty sure most people just use hook files.

Posts: 238 | I use mustad 3551s and keep a 25 count box box of 3/0,4/0,6/0,7/0,8/0 and 9/0 handy in the boat at all times. For some reason i never find myself looking for a 5/0 hook. It seems that 3/0 and 4/0 cover all my downsized baits,6/0 and 7/0 covers most of my mid sized stuff and 8/0 and 9/0 covers all the big stuff like pounders,2 pounders,13 inch grandmas,13 inch belivers and such. I do upsize just about every bait i run at least one hook size. Thorne brothers makes an excellent double chainsaw file sharpener or you can just as easily make your own with two chain saw files and a wooden file handle. Once you have the two files mounted side by side in the handle dip the first inch or so in epoxy or a jb weld type compound to keep the two files tight. In my opinion there isnt a better shapener made for big hooks.

Yep, but I have a plano box and it has at least a 1/2 doz each size pre-sharpened hooks ready to go in case I need to cut them. I never place any hooks in that box unless they are sharpen 1st. I always have time to do that at home, but really don't when the fish are biting. Many times, I too am upsizing hooks - if it isn't imparting the action of the lre. Posts: 4053 Location: Land of the Musky | In the mail as of 3 minutes ago Bubba. Still got about 10,000 3/0 round bend and 6/0 3551s left in the garage along with #5 and #7 Bucher super strong rings. Prices on Mustads has gone up about 20% since I got these 2 years ago. I am still just asking for the bulk rate I paid for them if anyone needs some. James PS-Thanks Brian! We are coming up early December to go to the Children's hospital for a doc visit if you need anything.
