| Hi my name is Michael Williams. I'm almost 11 years old from Ames,Iowa. And I'm trying to catch my first muskie before my dad does. We are fishing at Leech Lake from July 27 to August 11.
My dad bought me a 4601c3 reel and muskie rod. My question is what kind of baits should I buy? I have been looking on muskie fever and Thornes. Is a Baby Castiac Sunfish a good lure?
Thanks,
Michael |

| Michael,First off good luck on your trip! For the set-up you describe almost what my sun uses,I would lean more towards a couple Mepps,6" Jakes/Shallowraiders and a MuskyBuster Stomper(1 1/2oz.top-water)These will be easy to work all day and catch you some fish!I would shy away from the bait you talked about [:(] ! Good luck again and remember pick some lighter/easier baits as it will keep you fishing longer, hence better fish chance! Jeff |

| Hi. How you doin. I would recommend a suick,a bucktail of some sort (Mepps Magnum Musky Killer is good), a crankbait such as a depth raider or a believer, and a topwater like a topraider or a musky buster. Good fishin and good luck!!! |

|
| Micheal, what rod and line did you get? That will determine what baits you can get. Let us know. The lillytail is a proven bait on leech among others. |
|
| |
|
| I got a 6'3 Abu rod and my dad put 50 lb power pro on it. Where can I get a lilytail.

|
| Micheal, what is the rating on the 6'3" rod? You can get the lillytail at bass pro shops. I am not sure if it's in their catalog or not but you can call them, 1-800-bass-pro. |
|
| |
|
| The rating is 1-2 oz lures

| Micheal, that's a bucktail rod. Obviously bucktails are ok as well as smaller crankbaits. Bigger crankbaits require a rating up to 3-4oz and jerkabits 5+. Some smaller stuff will work with your rod but it's definitly not going to work with really big heavy stuff. Lilly tails will be ok as well as the mepps. |

| Michael, sounds like a future Muskie pro in the making. You have come to the right place for info about how to get started. Your set up will work just fine for small to medium bucktails, 5" & 6" crankbaits like the 5" crane. Mann's also makes a great 5 to 6" twitch bait that may work for you at leach. The Muskie Buster Stomper is a great lure on the northern lakes such as Cass, Leech and Mille Lacs. If it is ok with your dad E mail me with your address and I will send along a couple of lures to get you started. I think I can spare a couple from this ever growing pile of lures that I have here. Just make sure that it is ok with your folks first. You can get my E mail addy from my profile. Also my bio is posted on the Muskiefirst pro page. Take a look and let me know if we can be of any more help. |

| Just a further note for you Michael. Todd M. makes some really interesting in line spinners, if you ask him nicely maybe he would send you one for Leech Lake. How 'bout it Todd? Maybe Michael could get his 1st Muskie on one of your lures. Would be great PR[] [] [] [] |

| I'd take these guys up on his offer. They're obviously pretty good guys, and they know their stuff when it comes to fishing muskies. So I'm banking that they'll be sending you some winner baits. Todd's baits are pretty awesome and you definitely can't go wrong tossing them around.
catch ya later,

| Hey guys- Thanks very much. Michael loves the challenge of fishing for something bigger. Now he's looking for a muskie book to read, but doesn't know that I have Pearson's "Shield" book for him. Looks like I've found my musky fishing partner. With our new Lund, we'll definately get out more often.
Again, much appreciated.
All the best,
Don |

Welcome to the world of the muskie angler.
Good luck.

| Don, you are more than welcome. I knew that if the word got going around about "future Pro" we would get some lure activity going. Nothing but a great bunch of folks here at Muskie first. I will be sending along a couple of homemade bucktails as well as a small crankbait and small jerk bait. Keep him fishin' and trouble will not stop at your door. |
