Okay, I thought my drag was loose enough but I guess not. Either that or the lure was worn at some part. Today I had a Rad Dog spinnerbait get eaten in the propwash and I heard zzt..zzt..splash. Gone. Reeled it in to sharpen the hooks and this is all that was left.

That pretty much ended the outing for me. Not happy at all. I don't blame the lure brand, just kind of baffled how it broke.

My guess is that the bait was the problem. When I prop wash I leave my drag slightly looser because I have less line out which means less stretch and when the fish hits its probably already coming right to the surface and a tight drag would make this worse.

Worn out bait would be my guess too. Man do they put a cheap swivel on those lures. We do a lot of trolling close to the boat, set the drag the same for the propwash as other distances. I like some slip/give for sure.

I'm the same as JB. I set my drags the same as I do my other rods. I tend to keep a slightly tighter drag, but good enough for the fish to get some line out, as I don't want to bust my reels and rods (not to mention just get a set of musky jaws back lol).

Usually if you put your bait out and give the rod a good rip forward, that should let your drag slip a little as far as trolling goes. That's the easiest way to put it. If it slips too much, tighten it a bit, if it doesn't slip at all, you may have to loosen it a tad.

I've had .062 spinnerbaits fail in the xeact same way. It happens. Even casting that could happen.

I also agree by leaving your drag set the same as you normally would. If you loosen your drag too much the fish can cause slack in the line and you are more likely to loose the fish then. Where that spinner broke is where the wire becomes the weakest the fastest due to the bend in the wire.

Me too. I have had them break apart while casting... Makes me nervous to throw anything too old with a wire.

I would agree. Probably not a fault of the bait, but just old/used enough to wear out. I had a backlash with a pretty new M/G that snapped right there. I think that WAS and issue with the bait, but it broke at the same place. Definitely a weak spot on spinnerbaits.

Funny. We were just talking about this very topic last night.

We've routinely troll cranks in the prop wash and have missed several fish on our last outing because IMO the drag was set to tight.

So based on my readings to this post...think'n we'll loosen up the drag a titch for prop was trolling.

How far back do you run your baits when doing it in the prop wash? New to trolling ... thanks for your help.

The last fish I caught in the propwash was about 10' behind the motor. But I've heard of some guys who will run them literally 3' behind.

The lure was a year old. I don't troll a whole lot, but this one had maybe a pike, a 27" and 35" ski on it. I run em' about 5-15ft back.

My drag slips when I reef on the baits to clear weeds off, so it must have been the lure. I was trolling 3-3.5mph at the time.

It depends on what I'm running and how deep I want to get with those baits, but I run them from a couple of inches off of the leader to maaaaybe 15-25'back. But that would be a long line for me in the wash. Typically it's from 5 to 15 at most.
