How long should trailer tires last? Since most anglers don’t use their rigs all year long and the tread life of the tires still look good. The reason for this is this past weekend my buddies 2005 boat with 50 hours on it, had a blow out on a Good Year Marathon. Granted the roads were hot due to the temps and we noticed many cars changing flats as well. There were also a lot of re-tread truck tire gators all over the roads as well. The GY Marathon tire was just destroyed. Not sure if he hit something, but kind of disappointed at how the tire looked, pretty much garbage

not sure how long trailer tires are supposed to last. i have had my rig for 5 years now on the same set of tires. i have read somewhere that those good year marathons are only speed ratied to go around 60 mph which kinda supprised me. i dont personally like goodyears have had problems with them in the past i guess the name kinda says it all you can expect one "goodyear" out of them.

I've had 3 blow out this year, on tires that are only 1 year old, NOT GOOD. I was told by the maker, Carlisle, that I use my boat and trailer to much and the warrenty is void, so I guess they only make trailer tires for people who fish every so often.

One thing to make sure it to have them properly inflated, 50 psi is where I run mine which is what my dealer told me and several tire places as well.

No more Carlisle's for me, getting the Goodyear Marathon's soon.

A 5 year old tire (assuming no changing of tires and the 2005 rig sits on a 2005 trailer) will be ready for replacement regardless if the tread is good or not. The reason....dry rot. Over time the tire will start to develop cracks in between the treads, sometimes on the sidewall, etc which is a sign to replace them. So...If my assumption is correct, seeing the tire blow out would not be a surprise...it would be due to age...

why would you talk to a different dealer?

My boat dealer told me this, the guy over the phone at Carslile told me this, and 2 different tire shops in town both told me to run my tires at 50 psi.

So why talk to a different dealer?

I was referring to the comment you stated that you were told you were using your rig "too much" and that voided the warranty.
Didn't you buy it to use it?
I agree, proper inflation is VERY important, especially with trailer tires.

I am on my second set of Carlisle's in less than 2 years I was told they do not make agood tire but they changed the first set for me but are not willing to do any thing on the second. I will be going to a different brand now. I did hear good things about Good Year. As far as the blowout issue thier are to many factors that can cause blow outs and if you use your boat often a 2005 tire may be ready for a change anyway. Some times it is how you store the boat that makes the difference or the roads you travel.

I just had a big time blowout last weekend. Marathon made in 2001, properly inspected and inflated. I replaced both tires as the one that didn't blow was the same vintage.
The old Marathons and the replacement "Towmasters" both have the same max load rating of 1870# @ 50 p.s.i.. Both sets: 215/75/14, load range C.
I'm questioning the total load rating of 3740# for this set of tires on a Ranger 681 with 3 batteries a main and kicker motor and the naormal bunch of crap we carry in our boats. I have not weighed the boat, but will when I get the chance.
If I had had the choice (I didn't, as I got the only 2 tires in Antigo that would fit), I would have gotten 225/75/14 load range D.
No extra damage was done and the blowout was on the pass. side away from traffic and we got everything back in shape in an hour.

I had one blow the first day I used it three years ago. Picked up a nail somewhere and noticed it was flat while going 70 on I-94 on a 90 degree day. Tire was shot, nothing I could do. Stuff happens with tires, lots of stuff littering the roads. Make sure they are properly inflated, have enough tread and that you're not overloading them and there isn't much more you can do.

I don't like Carlisle either.

I run Denman...less money too. Going on 6 years now.

If your tires are wearing quickly, especially on the edges get the axle aligned, it is well worth the investment.

I have a little boat so little tires and they sure spin a lot. I don't take many long trips but I get out local a few times a week. So, new tires every two years and totally replace the bearings every five. Sounds like overkill compared to the posts above, but it's affordable and I'm confident running down the road.
