When trolling, has anyone ever used a Dipsy diver with a bucktail, spinner bait or shallow running crank?

No but I have heard a dipsey diver with a bulldawg.

Oddest things I have done while trolling (pertaining to the trolling) is jigging a fuzzy duzzit in the middle of my trolling pattern and put a live action lure in the propwash. I have to say the live action lure goes nuts in the propwash![:p]

Haven't tried it for musky's yet,but no reason why it wouldn't work ..Works on walleye.Only thing that might happen is the musky might go after the dipsy instead of the lure,Using a crankbait behind a dipsy make sure you tighten the tension down on the dipsy or it will set of the dipsy every time you make a turn ARTIE

I've used them for rockfish + they work great, especially w/ a non jointed shallow running crank; worth a try for sure.

I have 2 dipseys set up with 6' of coated leader running to swivel snap/lure. I have yet to catch anything with them but haven't used them much either. The pulsing of the dipsey adds action to bucktails but doesn't seem to do much to the cranks. I am going to have to spend more time dragging them.

Anyone using downriggers?

I have never used dipsys but I have tried some very large weights to get my inlines and spinnerbaits down to a level that fish have never seen.

I did not spend enough time doing this to get any kind of acurate experiment as it was just to much a pain in the butt to work with all the extra stuff. Same goes with the downriggers, muskie fishing is conplicated enough without adding all the extra gear to complicate things. [:sun:]

Have never fished bucktails with Dipsy Divers, use downriggers with those. Do fish shallow crankbaits with Dipsy Divers and it works just fine.

Never tried a Dipsy, but I have run a few ounces of lead in front of a 5' leader (80#maxima). It works just fine.

Bill,
Dispeys work good on baits that offer very little resistance. A larger bladed bucktail or bigger crank will usually roll out the Dipsey. The larger one is a little more stable than the smaller size for most muskie baits, but it pulls hard. I would highly recommend a fiberglass rod for this application. Late last year I started playing with Slide Divers and am very impressed. I no longer carry Dipseys in my boat. The Slide Diver allows you a lot more freedom in how long of a leader length you want to run and seem a little more stable with baits with a little more resistance.

I've done it, Brett is right about the hard pulling baits
but, it works well with lighter shallow running straight
cranks. Nice system to get at suspended 'ski' near
reefs and small islands on clear water lakes.
Downriggers ? um ah no of course not , no luck , don't
waste your time . Next thing you'll ask if I use plain
balls, pancakes or swing-outs - leader length, releases...
Stop me before I metion the secret bait, speeds and lakes.

Bill;
I ran big Red Fins and Rapalas behind dipsys. You'll need
a very heavy glass rod and at least 20 # line.Caught
smallies,walleyes and small muskies.Dipsys didn't work
well with baits that had a lot of pull.Look at all the
lures salmon people use.
luck
