I am in the market for a new muskie reel after wearing out my Abu 5600.. I am trying to find a Okuma Induron 400 but from what i hear they are no longer making this reel. Have heard good things about it but can't find one. I looked at the red isis but heard they were having some problems.

What can anyone suggest. I am looking to stay under $150 or so. This will be for throwing any muskie baits. I don't want to limit myself to a lightweight reel that can only throw bucktails.

Can anyone suggest what i should be looking at? Any info on the Shimano cardiff?

Shimano corvalus isnt a bad reel, ecspecailly for the money around $80. If you can a used calcutta for under $150 buy it they are great reels. I would perrsonally stay away from okuma, I have an induron that has been sent back 3 times to okuma all 3 times when I got it back the reel never made it to the end of the 1st day, and the reel was engaging during the cast and the anti reverse would go out. I couldnt even reel a topwater bait off the surface to the tip, it just sat and ground the gears. MY 2 cents.

I'd say go ahead and get the Induron. They're not discontinuing the reel because of performance issues, just coming out with a new one that I'm sure will be another quality Okuma product. Can't say I have any gripes about the four Okuma reels I own. They make good reels at a good price. When the new reels come out I will definitely pick one up.

Do you know when the new reels will come out? i am planning a few trips in the near future, (next couple of weekends) and need a reel. I would be interested is seeing whats new from them. I really want to switch from Abu for a while. They are okay reels, just nothing fancy and am looking for a higher end more powerful reel for DCG's and crankbaits for this fall.

I know Joe pretty well, and respect his opinion. He fishes hard, but isn't hard on his stuff from what I can tell.

Saying that, I think he must have gotten a lemon. I've been using Okumas since last year, and like them quite a bit. I did have the typical problem with them not staying disengaged, but they came out with a fix for that. Since getting them fixed, the disengaging problem has gone away.

I had another problem crop up due to the original problem, and got some parts (probably pretty expensive ones too) sent to me for free.

I do have one new Induron that seems a little funky. I PM'd Mark Rogers about it, but he hasn't had a chance to get back to me yet. I have a feeling it will be taken care of.

Anyway... they've been pretty good to me. If I have a problem, it's been fixed. They haven't been without their little issues, but I would keep buying them.

Saying all that, I'm interested to see what they are coming out with since they aren't making the Induron anymore. If you can wait, I would see what they have.

If not, the Okuma Red Isis is really nice too, and they cost $160. I have one with the twin paddle handle. I haven't used it a LOT yet, but so far so good.

I'd stay away from Okuma reels. For every one person that says that they like them, I know of two that don't. I don't think that you can get a real quality reel for less than $150. With that being said, I'd rather get an $80 Corvalus and then buy a brand new one in a few years than spend $150 on a disposable reel.

I don't think the Cardiff will hold up any better than the Cardiff. The Cardiff is just a little smoother when it's brand new.

I've seen a few used 400b's on the site going for $165(just a bit over your budget). If you can wait or post up looking. That would be my suggestion.

Don't think that would have anything to do with the mechanics of the reel. Is the backing spinning with the braid. or the braid spinning on the backing?

Try going one time around with a layer of electrical tape before you apply the backing can give some extra tooth for the mono backing to grip (Wind it tight!) then tie your braid to the backing with a blood knot.

To get back on track....Picking up a used calcutta would be a great deal (used is still used though and would make me a little nervous) As far a a new general purpose reel I've had great luck with my abu c3's. (Really love my 6500SSc3. It's one of my work horses. Proper maintenance and it has logged some serious hours. Don't throw the BIG stuff with em though.

I was very happy with Okuma's customer service when my Induron seized/broke/whatever you want to call it. They covered the repair and turn around time was decent. With the power handle, it makes a good double 10 reel for me - I actually prefer using it for this over my calcutta te

Had the EXACT same thing happen last night to my Induron. On my previous trip out I noticed it started slipping....then last night I coudly even pull in a single blade inhaler...what really sucked was when I caught a 22" pike and I coudn't even pull it in with the reel!

I called Okuma today and now it's on it's way back. They were great about it, but I'm without a reel now for at least a week. Hope I can get it back soon because all I have now is my 6600 which is worthless for anything other than the lighter stuff. I just got into this about 6 weeks ago and have gone totally hardcore since the get go and have tried to do this financially reasonable (I know now this is not a financially reasonable sport!)....next summer I'll have a calcutta....nothing worse than having that reel go down last night at prime time.

I can't tell ya what to get...I loved my Okuma the first couple times out, but a failure in 5 weeks is no good.
