I'm thinking about picking up a few pounders to try out. How deep of water do u typically use them? How shallow can u keep them if u start your retrieve right away without counting them down? What's the sink rate on them?

I would guess it's like 2ft per second, and I would guess you could keep this in the top 5 feet if you do an immediate fast retrieve. I generally throw them in 15ft and deeper. Until a "shallow" Pounder (oxymoron?) comes out, the big rubber that stays UP in the water column nicely is the Big Curly Sue from Shack Attack Lures. That one you can pretty much bulge on the surface without any trouble if you are interested in placing over the shallow weeds.

FYI-I have 42 colors of Shallow MegaDs out now too: http://www.gruntmuskielures.com/trophymusky.html Well, some are out of stock but they will all be in stock in 5 weeks or so. Shallow Mag SuperDs coming soon too. Can't make them fast enough

If you start cranking, and do a steady crank, no rips or pulls, it can stay in the top 1' if you want it too. Just depends on how fast your straight retrieve is.

Jim, that brings up a great question, how effective is the straight retrieve with the pounders verses the usual rip crank rip?

I'm a 100% Dawg newbie but have thrown Mags and Pounders a lot this year so far (pike love them). In any kind of cover or shoals, I like shallow mags, the Pounder works well off edges and in open water, it does get down fast. I can see it being a deadly fall bait when weeds thin out and you want to stay down 15-20 feet. You can keep the Pounder high in the water with lots of pulls and using the reel. Agrimm gave me a great tip, make sure you add in a couple good upward sweeps/rips as you get back towards to boat to lift the bait and trigger anything that's around. Long, heavy rod really helps. There are guys who throw them into shallow, sloppier stuff with good success too.
