Location: MadCity Wisconsin | I had to smile when I saw the thread on how to land a muskie when fishing solo.
I have landed 100 or more solo but nothing prepared me for last Sunday afternoon while trolling on the Madison Chain. I had a rip on the port side rod and picked the rod up while a nice muskie surfaced and broke water. The fish moved a little too close to my starboard rod so I reeled that line in with my left free hand and....felt weight, TWO fish on! Decided to wrap both rods with my left arm and reel with my right hand, alternating reels, first left then right rod. As both fish were alternately reeled to the boat I noticed one muskie was quite smaller than the other so I put the smallest fish rod in a rod holder hoping it would stay hooked. Then fought the larger fish as I picked up the net with my left hand. It took 2 try's but netted the first one. Put the net on top of a rope cleat on the gunnel and handle under the boat seat. Then grabbed the rod from the rod holder and found that the fish had gone under the boat on the opposite side and broke water on the other side of the boat. Carefully pulled the fish under the boat and on the net side. Net was stationary so I had to literally drag the fish up onto the net after 3 trys. Got her in......Two muskies in the net! Incredible feeling. A couple in a Lund just happend by and just stared at my net for a while, shocked. They agreed to take photos for me. Somehow pulled both fish out of the net at once, one right fist under the gill plate then left. First fish was 39" second one was 33". Sat down for half hour and caught my breath, thought I had taken a nap and dreamed this story, digital camera showed me otherwise. Hope I can post the pic here. Will give it a try. |

| Cool story. Not that you did anything wrong, in fact you obviously are doing something right to catch 2 at a time, or like any warden would ever write a ticket for it but technically I think you were over your limit! |

Location: MadCity Wisconsin | Reelman........You are correct, I may have been technically over the limit if this was considered "possesion". Debatable since the fish were immediately released. I would take my chances with a jury trial any day since it was an accidental, incidental catch. I would argue that I had to place both fish in the net to safely unhook them for release. I differ to my attorney friend and muskie angler Matt Devos.

Great catch by the way. I bet your heart had to be pumpin about 1000 beats per minute.
