went and looked at a used 98 traker 17ft deep v today,it looked used and stored outside but a decent price on it.The prop had some good dings on it,he said he normally fishes rivers and I know how rivers can be.The motor fired right up,just wondering what you have to worry about with a prop looking that bad, what damge could that cause to the motor, how much would it cost for a new prop for that boat.

I'm sure others will chime in but to answer your question, a bent prop shaft IMO is the most likely "other type" of damage that can occur. How is the skeg?

B4 you buy it (if you can) take the boat to a dealer and have them go over the motor. They can check the prop shaft and also check the compression on the motor. If any of the cylinders are low in compression, repairing this problem will cost you more than replacing a propshaft.

I'd buy a good reconditioned prop b4 I'd buy new. Try calling North American Propeller in Wausau. 715.359.5264

Ha! I just learned this one.....

Make sure the transom is sound. I heard that's a big big issue because a transom filled with wet rotty wood is a very tough, long hours repair. But a must repair because of safety issues.

To check the transom, while the boat is on the trailer, trim the motor halfway down and then get back there and lift up and push down on the motor shaft. The more flex you see in the transom, the bigger your problem. The boat I'm fixxing has this problem but it was caught while still an easy fix. We'll lift off the motor and inject some weird and expensive epoxy resin down into all the wood.

Now this is getting long but you might like this ditty.....The guy I hired to oversee my rebuid described how he'll take off and then replace the big 150 off the boat in my back yard. He'll arrive with a load of tires and landscape timbers and he'll use the power trim to lift the motor off the transome. Then he blocks in down somehow and pulls the boat forward. He's saying he can do this transom job for me in a single day.
