| Now that my FISHING boat has been hijacked by pirates the wife wants a boat that she can feel comfortable in! That was the reason I had the 1 I did but....
Thinking 4 stroke: Honda or Yamaha; 50-115hp depending on boat. need to know:
-best bang for $$$
-best for trolling
-best track record for servicability.
-provide speeds not exceeding 50mph as little Sponge enjoys getting behind the wheel
Thanks![:sun:] |

| Rik -
I am real partial to the Yamaha brand name. I've had Yamaha cycles and ridden Yamaha snowmobiles. Every one of them was rock solid. I have driven a rental Yamaha outboard and that was the quietest outboard I've ever used even though it was a 2 stroke.
Based on the past experience I've had with the Yamaha brand name I would expect nothing but the same from one of their four strokes.
Hope this helped you out. Let me know if you need someone to come down and break it in with you. I'll see if I can sacrifice my time just for your benefit.

| I have been using Yamaha outboards since 1990. The only reason that I have had two was because I upgraded my boat from a Tuffy Esox to a Tuffy Esox Magnum. It has been great to use, and still "smokes" similar sized motors and boats which are much newer than mine, the little that I push the throttle past half in the couple of tournaments I fish each year.
The Yamahas tend to be a little pricy if you are looking for strictly low dollar. In your position I would be looking at what service centers are around your home, as well as reputations they may have. There are many good brands available. Are you close enough to the ocean think about a saltwater option?
I would highly recommend the Yamaha motors. |

| 2-zip thusfar for Yammies! Steve, brother has a Johnson Seahorse + I had a Carolina Skiff which I SHOULD NOT have sold but dummy here has to buy/sell every year so there we go. Since I live 4 hrs. from salth20 now I go w/ the wife's cousin or friends there. Actually any motor can be used if you flush them good + apply WD 40. There are a couple of marinas near here that sell everything but Tuffys which I would like to have; s-loads of bassboats here. I may check into a Ranger Fisherman or something! Thanks fellows...[:sun:] |

| Sponge Bob, Steve Worrall could set you up with a new Tuffy.
You would be the even more impressive than you already are to all those eastern and southern "Boys". Then you wouldn't need to buy and sell every year! |

| LOL Stever! Actually I keep a fairly low profile. The only thing that gives me away is the cheerleading team that I hire to help me in my quest for a decent size fish! They run down the bank w/ pom poms + encourage me......[:sun:] |

| Spongy, I have a 16 footer with a Merc. 60 4-stroke. I only have about 30 hours run time, but it has performed flawlessly for me. It tops out in the mid 30’s and will troll just under 2 mph. all day. Once you get into bigger hp motors than this, a kicker motor is your best option for trolling.
Editing message: My wife just read me a recall letter from Mercury, They are replacing my whole motor due to a rocker arm carburater something in my motor. I''ll read it and give details later. The dealer says I''m getting the new 2002 EFI model now. This could be a good thing. |

| Sponge,
I work for the state wildlife agency in Utah and we are currently running Honda 50hp on three of our work boats. I cannot make any comparisons to other brands but they have performed flawlessly for the last 3 years - they get abused pretty bad too. Honda has been good in standing behind their product also - we sunk a boat and they replaced the motor because they couldn't get it to run again after submersion. They are a bit heavy and probably the loudest of the 4 strokes, but if they weren't so #@$% expensive, I'd probably own one by now.

| Spongy,
I have had both Honda and Yamaha and think they are both a good motor. Honda has been around forever and are tried and true. Newer 4-stroke motors in my opinion need to be a little better than a honda in order to sell them. Why by something that is as good as a Honda and is new when you could by a Honda that has a proven record.
I had a 100 hp Yamaha last year and this year I have the 115 EFI. Both forstroke and both tillers. The 115 Yamaha weighs a lot less than the Honda and is EFI.The EFI is awesome, no choke, no cranking, not temperature senistive, quality motor. Yamaha RPM's are 700-800. Yamaha comes with a 3-year warranty. Put that baby on a Tuffy 1990 Esox Deep V and your ready to roll.

| Thanks again fellows..... I'll have to take an advertisement from each, put them in a Tupperware bowl, shake + the 1 I pick is the 1 I buy! Wife likes the Tundra, Targa, 17 Pro Deep V etc. as they look good in the catalog but I don't know. You'll here me scream when I do get something though as even a trip to the Piggly Wiggly is a traumatic experience for me.....[:sun:] |

| Hey Bob, why in heck anybody would sell their carolina skiff is beyond me, that is a neat and useful hull. I think you will probably be happy with many hulls but need to think about where you are fishing. The Targa is a solid fishing set up and will get you out there and back probably until you get around the Grand Banks LOL, the only thing I would recommend is buy the biggest motor possible for the hull, it will help with the resale and you will never be driving it and wish that you had bought the bigger motor because you are afraid you will get lightninged, hailed, sucked up a waterspout or whatever and
you might have avoided it with another 2 miles per hour!!!! |
