Subject: mercury trouble

Hi guys, i have a 1500 mercury it is a 1978, ran fine until i went to put it in rev. and it backed up then shifted into forward and it would go but when i would throttle up it would just rev up high and not go into high gear it just stays in no wake gear, i got home and looked at the motor and noticed that the top linkage at the motor was loose i screwed it back to the other part of the linkage in the motor, do you think this is the problem or is it in the throttle box itself.

Ok, there are only 2 gears in the lower unit, forward and reverse. I suspect the problem to possibly be a spun hub in the propeller. Not sure about the linkage issue. Is the lowerunit making any nois when in gear? I guess it might be possible for it to not be going all the way into gear but if that were the case I would think there would be some noise. I would have the prop looked at first. Hope this helps.

went out and put the boat in gear and the prepeller would spin forward and make a clicking sound tried to spin it the other way and it would not spin. I then pulled the throttle back to reverse and tried to spin it, it would not spin either way in reverse, could this be the hub you were talking about?

Let me get this straight...when you hit the throttle, the prop spins no matter reverse or forward, but with any gas applied, the boat won't get up and go? Sounds like a spun hub.

With the engine off and the boat in forward gear the prop will make a clicking sound when you spin it by hand, this is normal. Does it make any noise when the engine is running and in gear? Still think it is most likely the hub in the prop.
