| In the next year or so I want to buy a new boat. I really like the Tuffy 1760 DW. I have some questions about this boat maybe some of you can answer. I fish muskies and pike 75% of the time and walleyes and other fish 25% of the time. I do a lot of trolling well into the fall so I like the idea of having the walkthru windshield. My question is what size of motor should I get for this boat? I was thinking between a 90 thru 115 horse motor. My buddy tells me there is no way I can troll down to 2mph with a 115. I really have no desire to MAX out the boat as it will probably be the last boat I ever buy. I want to be able to troll down to as low as 2mph. I really want a 4 stroke Honda, Yamaha, or Suzuki motor and I probably won't end up buying an additional kicker motor. Does Tuffy sell boats with anything besides Mercury? Also, most of the lakes I fish are well under 10,000 acres but I would like to be able to fish on bigger water like Mille Lacs or Lake Michigan every now and then. I drive all over the place to go fishing so I don't want a boat that's too big for some of Wisconsins smaller lakes and shallow launches. Can the 1760 handle the big and little stuff? I'm looking for a perfect compromise and this boat seems to be it. If anybody can help me out I would really appreciate it. And you can move this to the Boats and Motors forum if you wish. Thank you and stay safe this summer. | |||

Posts: 2082 | I would never put a 90hp on a boat rated for a 150!...and if your going to troll alot why would you not put a kicker on it? Especially since it "may be your last boat you buy" ... you mention being on some big water.... 150 and 8-10hp kicker is the way to go on that ride ...IMO Edited by IAJustin 7/15/2009 12:18 PM

Posts: 311 Location: Ontario | Dumping a five gallon pail on a short, stout rope off a transom ring/cleat will drop your speed down with a boat that size. Depolying the bowmount trolling motor down into the water eats a little speed also. Pails are the best thing I've found for slowing my 90hp on 17' boat. With two pails in we catch lake trout going 1.5mph-2.2mph all spring. The pails are not as easy to stow or space-efficient as a drift sock but going with the wind especially (how we catch 90% of our fish) the pails really seem to 'pull' the corners of the transom less than a sock and make steering easier. Pails are also decent for lugging stuff out of the boat at the end the day or to the boat at the start of the day (ie: clothes, lunch, trash, drinks etc etc). I have two socks and find myself using pails every time instead. I have heavy gym equipment-grade stainless clips on each short rope, one to the boat, one to the bucket. Easy on and off. Those knots take a lot of torque on turns etc. Forget about tying anything or you'll have to cut it off. The clips work great. Edited by JBush 7/15/2009 12:26 PM

| The yahama and etec 4 strokes handle very well, cannot account for any other brands. IMO, if you have a yami or etec 4 stoke under a 150hp you will not need a kicker motor, They idle slow and are great on gas! The boat is only 17'6, a 90 would handle it, however I would look at a 115- | |||

Posts: 2323 Location: Stevens Point, WI | I owned a 2007 Tuffy 1760 DW two years ago and I would agree that putting anything less than a 115 would not be a very good idea in my opinion. A 115 on that rig will push it low to mid 40's if everything is setup correctly and it will run just fine. Tuffy's can be bought with with any motor but Mercury and Suzuki are the most prevalent on Tuffy transoms because they've been two of the easier companies to work with in regards to getting motors. For what your wanting the boat to do, I'd suggest either the 140 Suzuki or the 150 Verado. Otherwise, I'd suggest a 135 Optimax and a 9.9. Prokicker. As for big water, I think the 1760 for the size and layout of the boat is one of the better rigs in that size range for big water. The boat was built like a tank, had a great layout and got plenty of speed with my 150 Optimax I had on it. I'd highly suggest this rig, just not with a 90 4stroke. Any other questions ask away, I'd be glad to provide personal experience with this rig. Edited by TJ DeVoe 7/15/2009 1:22 PM

| i ran a 1760 tiller with a 70hp Suzuki on it and i could only get that relatively small motor to run it down to 2mph under the right conditions. with a 90 or 115 it would probably be more difficult to go that slow without some additional braking, plus you'd not have the power of a larger motor when you needed it such as running in the bigger waters you describe. for that reason i agree with the others, put a full size 150hp main motor on it with a 9.9 4-stroke kicker for trolling. it might cost you a bit more up front, but if you plan to keep this boat for a long time, doing it right the first time will make you the happiest. | |||

Posts: 148 Location: Northwest Wi. | I currently have a '08 1760GC with a 140 Suzuki 4 str. I do not troll all the time but do a little, mainly in the fall. The 140 will troll down to 2.3 mph. without much vibration at ilde. Its goes about 40 mph. fully loaded with a 4 blade prop. most likely faster with a 3 blade SS. The hole shot is great. The 140 is also light for a 4 stroke. This motor is also very quiet. As far as big water, Mille Lacs is my home water and I can get out almost all the time, It will take honest 3 footers and fours, if you like excitement!! I do not have a kicker mainly becuse I don't troll much, but I have seen bad things happen to them going fast in real high seas. The 1760 will also be a good fit for shallow water but you will still need to find an access that do not have a "Hump" as the trailer has a downward V to fit the keel and can get hung-up on the "Hump". I plan to have this Boat/Motor for a long time and just love her.
