Muskie Fishing -> General Discussion -> Fouling Phantom

I am a big fan of the six inch Phantom, but I have been having a problem with the front hook fouling on the leader. It usually hooks itself when I give the bait a sharper snap. The easy answer is to work it slow and steady, but I feel the occasional hard snaps to be a great trigger to any lookers. The bait really darts on these harder snaps and I don't want to stop them. Do I need to change the front hook size or use a different leader? Has anyone else had a similar problem and if so how did you fix it?

I am a big fan of the Phantom and I have had similar problems with the front hook. I have found that if I give it a few slower twiches followed a quick hard twitch and then a lighter twitch right after the hard twitch the front hook won't hang up as often. If I do two hard twiches back to back, the front hook will hang up more often. Just vary your twiches and you will have better results. I also use a handmade six inch leader, that has helped also.

The most important thing to remember about working a Phantom is that there is no wrong way to do it. I've had action working it in a multitude of different ways. Awesome lure.

I love the 6's and probabbly throw them more then any other bait,,,Ive found that if you use a titanium leader you get less fouls I think it is because of the fact that the wire remains SO straight that it stays out of the way more. Youve probbably noticed that on a new wire leader you foul less but has the wire starts getting slightly bent you start hanging up,,I too sporadicly give them a hard jerk but when I do I try to quick sweep the rod tip and reel so has to get the slack out of the line so the leader dosent colapse back into the bait, I use a 6500 C4 high speed reel and it seems to work great on 6 inch phantoms, also you dont have to even jerk or move your rod tip to get them to glide just quick turns of the reel handle will get these babys hopping,,they do foul though but there worth the trouble

I have the problem too, but one thing I do is give it another hard jerk and it will untangle it 50% of the time.

Norm:

After a week of northern fishing what would you expect the bait to do. I think it is just the operator who needs to work on his coordination. I have not had any problems with the 6", I imagine your using the splits rings to attach you baits, maybe they are hang up alittle.

Good luck

I use a straight wire leader and that seems to make it foul at a minimum. What a bait is all I can say.

This is common with this lure and the manta. These are the two gliders I get hung up in my leader alot just because how small of an angle they turn on. I have figured out to shorten up on the glide time. Just tap it a slight faster and it seems like it doesn't get caught up as much. Sometimes if I get hung up too I have figured out if you slap the slack on the water with a hooksetting motion ( a small one taht just slaps the slack) that undoes it(at least with the manta). Works for me.
