How old do you have to be to be able too drive a boat all by your self? My son is 15 and wanted too know. | |||

Posts: 2015 | every state is different heres Iowa: A person under 12 years of age may operate a vessel propelled by a motor of more than 10 horsepower, including a personal watercraft, only if he or she is accompanied on board by a responsible person who is at least 18 years old and experienced in operating the vessel. A person 12 years of age or older but younger than 18 years of age may operate a vessel propelled by a motor of more than 10 horsepower, including a personal watercraft, only if he or she: Has successfully completed a boater education course approved by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources or ... Is accompanied on board by a responsible person who is at least 18 years old and experienced in operating the vessel. Persons required to have completed a boating safety course successfully must carry their boater education certificate on board and make it available upon request by an enforcement officer. Boater Education Certificate Operators required to have a Boater Education Certificate must carry it on board. | ||

Posts: 69 Location: janesville | in wisconsin you have to be 12 or older to drive a boat by yourself and have to complete a boaters safety class. i did the same thing a couple years ago when i was 12 so now that im 16 i can use the boat by myself. | ||

Posts: 16632 Location: The desert | I think everyone should have to take boater safety course. Fisherman, pleasure boaters, and especially jet skiers. The class is very valuable and some people flat out need it. | ||

Posts: 264 | one thing that really ticks me off is that if you have your drivers liscence you can drive any boat. because of that we have these yahoos out on the water that have no clue about boat safety or what the different buoys mean since theve never taken the boaters safety course or learn how to drive on the water safely. | ||
