I'm looking for a new reel for cranking big blades and was wondering if there are any opinions about the saltist level wind model. It has a good retrieve rate and low gears so it seems good on paper. Just wondering if anyone has tried it.

Thanks

Check out the couple other threads on the reel on here....some good info, but I love mine. It's a little tank of a reel and burns the 10's in with ease.....

Really can't go wrong with the Saltist or Shimanos either.

My motive for looking at it is that it is a level wind. I haven't found any other level winds with retrieves in the 30+ inch range and low gears. Are there any out there I am missing?

I'm in the process of deciding on a good big blade burner. I have a number of the Penn 975, but that reel is not a burner, and not the best in terms of durability when using it soley for big blades. I really have fallen in love with it for everyday musky fishing, but will be shopping for a good durable reel for the big trash can lids.

Now, I understand that the trinidad 16n is a favorite of many. I am leary about paying that kind of jing foranother shimano, but have heard too much good regarding that reel to ignore. I am also looking at both the saltist 30 and 40 level wind. I'd look at the 40 simply because it has a pick-up rate similar to that of the trinidad. Could someone with experience with the levelwind 30 or 40 tell me how they compare to the trinidad? Which is less bulky/more comfortable to use? One thing interesting to note is the number of complaints regarding the trinidad non level wind seem far fewer than those of the non lw saltist. Would that be due to the narrower/easier to control spool of the trinidad?

Thanks much in advance!!

I have been using (lightly this year) a saltist 20 with the levelwind. It seemed prone to backlash with 80lb stealth but the 80 ultracast seems better. Bulkier line? The 20 is about the same width as a Abu 5500 and a touch taller. Full to the top I measured 35-36 inches of line per crank. I think BN said his Trinadad 16N was getting 32" when filled with line to its "proper" working order. The drag on the saltist is awesome. When I get another it will be the size 30, the extra width would be nice to hang onto. I have held and made a few casts with the 40 and it is was way to bulky for me.

the 40 saltist is too big imo...I palm reels and it's a monster, weight, size, etc...
As Chad said the Trinidad I have is bringing in about 33" per crank, from other guys I know that have Saltists/Trinidads etc etc we all seem to have them spooled to bring in that much...I also have a 30 size Saltist w lw and it is spooled at about 3-32 per crank and imo the Trinidad brings them in easier ....really you can't go "wrong" w a saltist lw ...heck you can get 2 for the price of one Trinidad 16n...but I'll take my Trinidad any day over the saltist...saltist is used for a backup...

The Saltist is prone to backlash, make sure the spool isn't too full and the spool tension is set correctly. I had to pull some line off mine and once I did, the thing was casting unbelivable. I can't get over how smooth it is and the retrieve.

i used a Saltist 40 (non-lw) last year. it was a burner for sure, but pretty bulky especially for my small hands. i also found that i didn't use the 47"/crank speed, just didn't need it to be _that_ fast. good solid reel, but too much for my uses.

i picked up a Trinidad 14 that i've been using so far this year. i spooled it most of the way up, so it's probably getting in that neighborhood of 32"-33"/crank that people have been discussing here (it's 36" at full spool). this is plenty fast at a normal retrieve, and i can push the pace with it easily if i want to blow a double-10 out of the water.

there's a definite cost/benefit to this vs the larger size reel.
cost = it pulls slightly harder than a larger reel spooled down for the same amount of line pickup per crank - though it's still much much easier than trying to spin a lesser/smaller highspeed reel.
benefit = it fits my hand much easier than the larger 16-size reel (it's about the same size of a 400 TE) so i'm not getting the same kind of fitigue that i did in the past - and that means i can keep using it longer. and when i'm tossing a double-8 or other standard bucktails, it's both super fast and easy to hold.

I have the 30 Saltist and the 16 Trinidad Never a problem with backlashes for me, I can still palm it (bairly) and it pulls lures pretty good.

The Trinidad will be your better option for really burning DCG's.......Both are built like a Tank.. The Trinidad is just a little more work, but I'm glad I've got one., Also, Pounders fly thru the water with this reel.

Had the Saltist 40 HS non LWind last season and found it a bit bulky. It burned in the 10s like mad, but the size and weight made it a one-trick pony. I also struggled with backlashes w/o the LWind...maybe that's my fault, but I prefer not to have to pay so much attention to preventing backlashes.

I was out last night with my new Saltist 30 Lwind for the first time, and find it casts very well w/o backlash issues, pulls plenty fast, is geared to stand up to pulling 10s for extended periods, and is small enough/light enough to not be a one-trick pony. I'm happy with that purchase.

what about for those of us that prefer a left-handed retrieve reel for db 10's?
i'm used to the aprox 13 oz weight of my lunas and noticed the saltists and others push 20 oz's or more. does a high quality "properly geared" for db10's left-handed mid-weight levelwind exist out there?
thanks...

The season is well underway....How is the Saltist holding up for you? I am going to purchase a new reel in the next week or so and am wondering if the Saltist is holding up well after some serious use. If the reports are good, I am gonna get the 40 and if they are not, Im going to stick with the TE400. Thanks for the help gentlemen.

They hold up fine (built like a tank - but get the 30 - the 40 is too big about twice the size of a TE400 - and the 30HS has 36" of line per crank plenty to burn 10's ......I have the 40 and will never buy another because of the size (at least not to muskie fish) - It will make a great marlin reel in the winter though

The new Saltist level wind 40 works amazing!!! I have not used it a ton this year but last weekend when the air temp was 95, calm with full sun it got a fair test and let me tell you it passed!!! It backlashes maybe a touch more then on a standard baitcaster so large improvement from the non level wind. I had clients casting it no problem and considering they where pretty new to musky fishing and casted it with minimal problems that's pretty impressive.

I tried a trinidad 14 this year, wasn't crazy about the lack of levelwind, and it wasn't any faster than my 7000's. You have to underfill the spool, and I measured the line retrieve w/ a yardstick and was only getting 30". Not bad, but I just picked up a 7000te, measured that at 30" as well, but has a levelwind and a much longer power handle than my trinidad. This thing is the best d10 reel I've tried so far. It's big though, bigger than a 7000, but I still palm it. Never tried a tn16 or saltist though.

I have the 40Lw as well, I do honestly think it may be slightly big, who am I kidding, it is very BIG. I cannot palm the reel, and feel like I should be wearing one of those straps around my body, like shark fishing, lol. Then again everything now is big compared to my Toro's (love um). Though I ONLY bought the 40LW to burn big bucktails and keep the stress off my Toro's, it does the job very well at a very reasonable cost.
