Posts: 388 | 2004 1750 SC Fishhawk (now called the 1700 model since last year). This modification consists of using two vinyl rain gutter downspout tubes routed behind the carpet covered aluminum plate on the port side of the rear casting deck. Tubes were cut to length and riveted together to keep them in the same spot. There is some foam floatation behind this plate that will need to be shaved down a bit to still fit. Also you will need to cut off the bottom of the wood plate that fits on the front side of the panel to allow room for the downspout to come out of the space behind the aluminum plate. Main reason for doing this is that 8.5' rods that are being stored above the rod locker either take too much room on the front or rear deck. The side console Fishhawk does not have any room on the starboard side for laying rods down. Rod guides and tips have a tendency to be stepped on when laying on the back deck. This modification allows me to place rod tips of two rods into the tubes and keep them off the back fishing deck while keeping the butt end comfortably off the front deck. Posts: 1663 Location: Kodiak, AK | Very cool. I just used gutter downspouts such as those to make a vertical bait box.

Posts: 335 Location: Minnesota | Thanks for sharing - I might have to do something like that to mine. I don't have pictures to share but when I replaced the front deck on mine I did something similar to the front of the rod locker and made it so I can fit 8.5 foot rods in there. I had to cut a large hole through the metal support plate in the front of the rod locker but now my rod tips extend up to the front of the storage compartment instead of half way. Your modification would make it nicer to store rods on deck while fishing - thanks.

Posts: 388 | The downspouts also work well in the middle front deck compartment as an "in deck bait box". They stack together perfectly in 6 wide rows and have enough give that they hold themselves in place without any need to glue them together or fasten. I also use round PVC pipe glued together to make bait storage in the big compartmetns. Also have a PVC pipe threaded through under the gunnel in the narrow space between the side console and freeboard on the starboard side to serve as a rod tube or to store the stearn nav light. Would love to see a photo of the rod locker modification. There is a narrow factory slot that I use on my boat that you can thread the rod tip through by pressing it against the freeboard when pushing it into the rod locker. Also need to wrap the free end of the line around the rod blank a few times to prevent threading rods together. Kind of a pain but it works. Once in a while I have to glue a rod guide ceramic back in place due to catching a line guide on the way in or out. A tube installed in this location would be very useful. Photo 1 shows under deck lure storage. Photo 2 shows the PVC starboard rod tube Photo 3 shows the factory slot in the rod locker extending into the front compartment (which would be well served to widen) Click on the photos to see the whole thing...
