Anyone know how to fix sticky push buttons? For clarification, I cannot get the reel to go into free-spool in the figure 8 while the reel is under tension (lighter baits I can, but double 10s I cannot... nor when fighting fish). Does the entire push-button mechanism need to be replaced?

I think this is normal. My 400TE is the same way, if there is tension on the reel, especially 10s and 13s, the button will not push.

I'm not sure about the TE but there are very few reels that you can push the button down on when there is presure on the spool. There are probably more but the only ones I know of are the Abu Morrum and EXT series.

Never had this problem with my Lunas. This simply cannot be the case since LOTS of people (including myself) free-spool in the figure 8 and free-spool fish in battle.

The TE will not go into free spool when there is presure on the spool. This is one of the main reason that a TE will go bad is when you jam down the spool button under load. The TE has as a very large 4 disc DARTAINIUM DRAG washers, and if the drag is not smooth just re-grease the drag washers with Cal's drag grease. Also if you are going to still free spool then when you hit the button bend down on your knees and this will take the presure off the spool for a second and it should go into free spool with out to much damage to your TE. Most newer reels today comes with CARBONTEX drag washers use them , they are not like the drag washers that came with your dad's reels.

I have hit free spool on my two TE's a zillion times while throwing large bucktails and when fighting fish. Never seems to be a problem for me.

My TE button became sticky after about 8 years of hard use. I always hit the button with tension on it to go into an 8 too. Sent it into Shimano, and it works perfectly again. I will not use a reel that won't go into freespool with tension on it.

Mine got "sticky" too over time. Tried several things. Tried reel oil to lube the slide. Didn't work very well. WD-40 on the slide seemed to work pretty well... but it is short lived.

My question is... is there somewhere INSIDE that needs lubrication too? If so... how do you find that spot?

I figured that I either bent something just slightly and it was binding or that the plastic that the thumb bar slides on eventually got a little rough over a lot of use. I tried the lubing it too and it didn't seem to help. Dunking it in the water did seem to help though. Either way it is fixed now and I'm back to lovin the TE.
