A buddy of mine has a short notice opportunity to go to Canada. He does not have a passport....is he S.O.L. without one?

Probably....as of June 1st everyone crossing into Canada by vehicle or plane needs a passport. It's taking 4-6 weeks right now to get one.

technically, you need a passport to get back INTO the United States from abroad.

you can get a passport for $100 or a passport card for $45.
the passport card is nice since it fits in your wallet (it's for N American travel).
one advantage of the full passport is that you can pay an extra $60 to expedite processing and delivery.

general info:
http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738_2.html

processing times:
4-6 weeks standard, 2-3 weeks expedited
http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/processing/processing_1740.htm...

i had mine expedited and it was delivered to my house 5 days after i submitted the application...

Lambeau is right on FYGR8 - thats the quickest and only way. If you are staying in MN and fishing Ontario (LOTW) you should not have an issue since you are not crossing a boarder (by land anyways).

People,...... Get a passport.

You never know when you might need to travel outside the U.S.
Even my 12 yr. old has one.

I am sure he will run out and get one so this opportunity does not pass him by again. Thanks!

The latest article I read on the subject said that they are going to be be forgiving at first, due to the back log of applications and just getting people used to it in general. They said that US border patrol would let non-passport holder in after a "brief" background check.

Now take this for what it is worth. Every crossing is different. Could easily depend on the kind of day they are having. The article gave no specific cut off date for this leniency. He very well may be able to go, but I would do some hardcore research before I attempted it if I were him. (Unless he trusts third hand information from some guy that posted on the internet )

Either way, we should all have passports.

Easy to get. I got my last one in 3 days. I got it expedited to go to Iceland but this was during the "rush" and I still had no problems. Makes it very easy to go into Canada with one. Much less hassle and I assume it also means less likely of a search and hold up for an hour at the boarder... JMO

you do not need a passport to enter canada but it helps to have
you need a passport or the new card to RE-ENTER the States

so you'll be able to enter canada but might have problems going back the the US

good luck at the border

You can get one in a few days by using an online expeditor or by going down to the US dept of State office if you are near a major city that has one...can get them in one day at the USDoS offices in person with proof of travel plans

The border agent that I spoke with said that Canada will not let you in without a passport. They don't want you stuck in their country.

The article that said they would be forgiving for a little while was intended for people already in Canada without a passport and coming back.

From everything I have seen - you will NOT be let into Canada without a passport.

So if you are in Canada with a US Drivers Liscence and a US passport US Customs is not going to let you back into the country? I guess you would have to fly from Canada to MExico and then just walk across the border!

There is a gace period and you can get by with a drivers license and a birth certificate. Not sure how long the grace period will last but some friends came through and went home last weekend.
Get a passport.

This seems to come up every year, JUST GET THE DARNED PASSPORT,
Then there won't be any issues unless you have a Criminal Record of some sort.

I live in the Chicagoland area, and there is a place to go in downtown Chicago where you get your passport the same day. Although the process takes a few hours, it would definitely be worth it given the situation. Not sure if this is availalbe for all states, but I'm sure the post office can let you know.
