Does anyone know/knew Dick Gries? Anyone know what happened to him over the years? As a newbie lure collector, I'm trying to get some background on the history of his lures. Thanks in advance,
steve

Same here. Dick is a great guy. He used to guide and obviously build lures, write a bit, and was an ambassador of the sport. Haven't seen him in a while.

Back in 96, I think, I went to his Garage Sale where he was selling the last of his lures. I was lucky enough to pick up several, should have bought more including some unfinished Striker Lure Bodies! I overheard Dick tell several of his buddys "that he was through with Muskie fishing and he was going to play golf".

Bought, what he told me, was his prototype for the TopKick. That lure has only seen water off of the pier for short tests.

Last I looked he was still in the Minocqua phone book.

I don't know when but Dick Gries sold his bait company to a guy by the name of Bruce Schwengel (maybe mid-90s?). I don't believe he ever made a bait. If he did he probably just finished up some Dick had started.

I fished with Dick many times when he was guiding. Got some nice walleye with him and also many musky--had a great day using those strikers--4 fish boated and a few more follows also. I actually caught my largest Wis. Walleye and Musky while being guided by him. Great guy and a darn good fisheman also.

First 3 muskies I ever caught were on a Striker Jr. It's still a confidence bait for me. I've seen a few of his lures at Dorn's Hardware in Madison. I've got a couple Striker's, Striker Jr's and a couple Topkicks.

Dick Gries is a close friend of mine. Basiclly, after guiding +200 days a year for many many many years and making I believe colse to 80,000 lures he got tired and sold the company to a couple of guys. They didn't manage it all that well and is no longer around. His lures can be hard to find, I've only found two and won them on ebay.

As I wrote above, Bruce Schwengel purchased the company from Dick. He has since I wrote passed on Aug 3rd, 20008, here is the link to Bruce's obit http://www.muskie411.com/cgi-bin/clubforums/forum.cgi?az=show_threa... I do not know what ever happened to the bait company. I did call him once when there was a bunch of interest in the Striker Jr, but he told me not to give them his number.

Excellent guide, spent a day with him as my guide long ago. He knows the Cisco Chain very well.

If I recall correctly, one of the clerks at Boulder Junc Sports told me he became involved in one of the shooting sports.

loved his lures, alot of euros bid very high prices on them when they hit ebay. The Mercer Creek from Smity baits looks alot like the old striker, does anyone know how they stack up?? Wish we could still get the old strikers, the muskies love them.

The Mercer Creek is a heavier lure made from a denser wood. My Striker Jrs are very buoyant baits.

I have been lucky finding Dick's lures. I found 4 black strikers with the flash lighting bolt at a fishing flea market this spring. That gives me about 15. I am going to have to starting fishing a few. They were $12/mint and I got 4 for $45. I have a e-mail of a guy who bought a bunch of dicks topkicks and had them painted by the original painter. Now these are some kicka** paint jobs. He was selling these for $20 a piece. I will e-mail him and ask if he has any more. If he does I will forward you his e-mail.
