Posts: 537 Location: Gilberts IL/Rhinelander WI | Last year I found out that my Knipex didn't float. This year while walking through Menards, I saw a pair of midget bolt cutter's for $5.99. OK, I'm all for buying the best of everything when it comes to musky fishing ,just ask my wife, but after I bought these and got home to try them out, I was very surprised. These bolt cutter's cut through the shanks of the hooks on my mag dog like they were crappie hooks. Without a doubt just as easy as my knipex did. Now for those who will say they won't last, buy four pair and you are still at half price of the knipex. I bought four of them. How many times do you really cut hooks anyway?? The ones from Menards are guaranteed forever. I asked if they became dull, or whatever and the manager said return them for a new pair. How can that be beat? Some things we use are overrated ,I think Knipex just made the list.

Posts: 477 Location: Iowa | Check a few different online places. When I got mine they were on sale, buy one, get one half off. I can't remember what website it was though. As far as buying the best, Knipex is the only way to go. I have cut a lot of hooks and do not have to worry about the knipex getting dull, or weak like the cheap imitations. The others will eventually start to get loose and not cut anything. I would rather only have one I can depend on all the time instead of 10 that can might not work right if someone happens to be pinned to a fish that is thrashing around trying to tear your hand off. Location: Northern Wisconsin | i thought i could save 40 bucks by buying the 10 dollar bolt cutters from menards. Well anyways, got the musky in the net and two of the trebles got stuck in it's stomach and went for the cheap-o bolt cutters only to find that the suick hooks were too thick to cut and the bolt cutters basically broke. get knipex, they work awesomely

Posts: 21 | I shouldn't post this without all the info handy but . . . there is a website where you can get Knipex cutters for $38.88 per pair. Best price I have found anywhere. I cannot find the site right now. I will look for it and post asap. I ordered them and they are real.

Posts: 203 Location: Germantown, WI | I bought my Knipex Cobolt mini bolt cutters from AK Tools several years back. I had previously used a cheapo pair from Sears. The cheapo pair worked, but the Knipex cuts 6/0 hooks like butter. I bought the pair that are currently being sold for $38. The website is http://www.aktoolsonline.com/. You may find a cheapo pair that works, but if you ever get hooked while unhooking a fish or have a huge fish that takes the hooks deep I think you'll be glad you bought the Knipex

Posts: 311 Location: Ontario | Not even Knipex are the be-all and end-all, I wrecked the top 1/3 of the cutters on mine taking a shot at the main shank of a 10/0 last fall in the dark. Probably not what the tool's made for but for what I paid, I would have rather the cutters just couldn't handle the job instead of chipping apart while trying. There's a big nick in the blade now that won't cut anything, and the tip of the jaws is what I like to cut with. I may have pushed them a little far I think. No tool is infalible. If I could grab a couple cheap sets that would cut for a season or two I'd pick them up, for sure. My Knipex still work fine, they just won't cut in that one key spot. Don't even ask what I paid for mine $CDN like six years ago.. Edited by JBush 6/3/2009 7:45 AM

I don't think you would have had this problem if you would have used the very bottom of the cutting portion.

Posts: 40 Location: Elkhorn, WI | 5th lake Brad, I agreed with you till last week. I had a double cowgirl get engulfed and had to reach to the back of the mouth to get the cutters on the hook. I could only get the cutter's tip on the hook and sill have leverage. They bent to the side and WOULDN'T cut the hook. Being the the Menard's pair were only $5.99 I did have two pairs with me just in case. Second pair, same results. It wouldn't have mattered if I'd had 10 pair with me. They just don't have the balls to cut with the outer end of their jaws. Luckily there was a boat within shouting range that had knipex. They worked first try. Cheaper to buy the knipex the first time around rather that trying the cheapos then having to get the good ones in the end.

Posts: 4080 Location: Elko - Lake Vermilion | Guys, I know that Knipex are the cats arss,......... but I just bought a pair of Kobalt 8" bolt cutters for under $14.00 (for my job) I just cut off the top hooks of 2, pounders with ease,.... so I tried an 8/0 hook shank , and it cut right thru with no problem...... I am impressed, and it comes with a lifetime guarantee, with no questions asked. Jerome

Location: Oswego, IL | I also bought a non brand cutter. Works fine, I sharpen the blades myself, and replace once no longer cut threw a 16pny nail.
