Location: Kronenwetter, WI | So my wife and I were packing up the boat while floating about 20 yards off the landing after fishing today (skunk). This gentleman and his gal were on shore next to the landing fishing for smallies when his rod doubles over, up onto shore he pulls this 30" musky. Flop, flop, flop on the rocks this fish is dancing while he holds the line in his hand. By the look on his face, this guy is at a loss. He proceeds to start to step on the fish in order to subdue it.
"Don't step on it!!" I holler out. "Put it back in the water, I'll come help, I have tools!" I follow up. Amp up the trolling motor, pull it up and glide to the sand, scoop up the fish in the net, hop out, grab the fish, pop out his creature (brown creature, note to self), hold it up for him.
"What IS it?" says this guy.
"That's a musky, congratulations", I reply before placing it gently back in the water to see it swim off strongly.
"I wasn't sure what to do", comments the gentleman, "I didn't want to get cut up".
"Yeah, ya' gotta be careful", I say and go to get the truck.
After we load up my wife tells me about their conversation...
"So...", asks the gentleman, "Why couldn't I have kept it?"
"Have to be 34" to keep", replies Linda, "And you don't keep muskies anyhow".
"Why?", He asks..."Because they're going extinct?"
My wife ponders trying to explain...rare fish...prized and revered by folks like us...to darned hard to catch as it is....
She finds herself slowly nodding her head, a somber expression crossing her face, "Yeah, they're going extinct".
"Oh", he replies.
Gotta love my wife. |

That's awesome Cowboy, I havent even heard that one in the land of 80 inchers. |
