Posts: 646 Location: In a shack in the woods | A week and a half ago my motor started idling higher than normal but at wot the boat ran slower. I tried to go fishing tonight and the motor ran fine except it wouldn't go fast. It still idled high, but at wot it was only about half revved out. I was just pushing water. Gas anyone had this happen to them or know what it could be? Thanks in advance.

Posts: 32953 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Sounds electrical to me. A bad fuel pump would just shut the engine down, could be an ecm or fouled plugs depending on brand and year. Or not.

Posts: 433 Location: Cedarburg, Wisconsin | Could be something with the throttle linkage? Sounds like the motor isn't getting the message to "go faster".

Posts: 646 Location: In a shack in the woods | Its a triple. The bottom plug is a little black. The other 2 look fine. I am going to get new ones tonight. I drained the bowls on the carb and no water in them.

| How big is the motor? On smaller motors anyway I've seen the plastic/rubber part inside the hub break loose from the prop. This will allow you to use the motor just fine at lower speeds but when you trying to reach high gear, the prop was actually slipping on the hub. Wierd because the blades may look like new. My dad experienced this last year on a 25hp Mercury motor. Dug into everything - thought lower gear unit was shot but inspected and looked fine. Changed the prop and it was like a new motor. Don't know if it could be the same thing but thought I'd throw that out there. | |||

Posts: 646 Location: In a shack in the woods | I took it to a guy last night. He thinks crud got into the carbs through the oil tank. He is cleaning the carbs out today. Hopefully I will have it back by tomorrow for opener.

Posts: 1887 Location: syracuse indiana | it all depends on the motor.. mine did that when i bought her 5 yrs ago. she would not go on plane. at all. but to my surprise one of the fuel pumps on the optimax took a crap and wouldnt put enough fuel in to run it at high rpm's....bill

Posts: 646 Location: In a shack in the woods | He cleaned the carbs and it's a little better. I'm putting new plugs in and buy new gas with seafoam in the morning. He is thinking it's could be the fuel pump. How can I test it out to see the pressure? What psi should a fuel pump put out? 25hp Suzuki 2 stroke oil injected

Posts: 646 Location: In a shack in the woods | So far I have put new fuel filter, had the carbs cleaned twice, rebuilt the fuel pump ( mechanic wrecked the diaphrams taking it apart), ordered a new coil and tried swapping it out with all the others. Still does it. The mechanic told me to go buy another $67 coil because maybe it's 2 coils. I have went 3 weeks without a boat while he has been working on this. Now tonight he tells me my water pump might be shot. It worked fine when I dropped it off. I have now stuck $100 into this motor for nothing and he told me he will try to keep my bill for labor under $125. He didnt even fix anything. Im not even sure what i am paying him for, breaking my water pump? Wrecking my fuel pump?I am taking it to the dealer in the morning. I am just so frustrated right now. Needed to vent a little LOL Edited by bassinbob84 6/22/2009 11:02 PM

Posts: 16632 Location: The desert | If it makes you feel any better one of my honda motors has a similar problem. I was told it needed to be jetted. He had our boat for darn near a year and didnt do anything, free storage I guess. Just yesterday I had to take it into a different shop as I have what I believe to be lower unit grease up in the cowling. Looked all milky so I'm almost certain we've lost a seal somewhere. That motor is nothing but a hunk of junk.

Posts: 897 | Yeah, I tried doing my own work last year. Ended up paying a mechanic around $300 to replace some high speed electrical gizmo. Learned my lesson on that one. Just gonna bring it in right away rather than waste money "fixing" things that don't need to be fixed and not having a working boat for a couple months. Sucks when you do take it in and the mechanic doesn't get it right the first time. That happened to me last year as well. Get referrals.

Posts: 86 | About ten years ago we had a problem with an older Evinrude 25hp tiller. Intermitant power problems. On our week long trip to Canada, a day in, it went to the shop. Got it back two days later. I hit some rocks and it shut down, it would start but as soon as I would put it in gear and twist the throttle it would shut down. Figured it was a bent shaft. Took it to the shop and found out the problem was the fuel line on the motor was deteriorating(old) and pieces were getting stuck in the carb. Mech changed out the fuel line, removed the debri from the carb and no more trouble. Probably not the same problem you're having but it just goes to show you never know what the problem could be till you get the right guy looking at it and even then it make him a time or two to figure it out.

That sounds spendy.lol Well if I can once again make you feel better, sounds like my motor may have a blown head gasket or a crack in some other area I can't recall off hand (was told there is water in the oil, which I partially already figured out). I do like our Honda motors, however NO ONE services them. The sole place that does is useless and takes forever. Edited by Pointerpride102 6/23/2009 7:31 PM

Posts: 646 Location: In a shack in the woods | Talked to the dealer today. He said he had a yamaha in a couple years ago with the same problem. Some one else had cleaned the carbs twice and it didn't fix it. They put in carb kits and it ran like new again. I gave the ok to buy 3 carb kits and give it a try. Hopefully that's the problem. It will be at least another week though since it takes so long to get anything from Suzuki. For the first time in my life I wish a had the same motor as every other joe. At least I would be able to get parts easily.

Posts: 646 Location: In a shack in the woods | I picked it up yesterday. It is a little slower than what it used to run but I don't care. I am so happy to have my boat back. The musky house in longville is the place to take Suzuki's. He ordered the parts on Tuesday and I picked it up Friday. Great service friendly guys.
