I picked one up at the musky expo and the bait looks awesome and I've thrown it a few times off the dock to check it out and every time the tail tangles in the back hook. Does anyone else have this problem? I took the back hook off and it works great, do you think this will cause a problem hooking fish? It's a small bait so I think the one big treble may be enough. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Joe

Joe - I've had the same problem....if not every cast, it's every other. I'm using a 8 inch single strand leader without a bb swivel. I tried using a rubber band on the back hook, but that just put's the back set of hooks right up by the front treble (I didn't like that). Next I shrink tubed the back hook so it hung down and back at a 45 deg. angle....that didn't work well either. I'm looking for advice too! Maybe a large hook on the front and rubber band it around the body???

Edit : I'd like to add that the bait looks awesome in the water and it's moved some fish for me in the short time i've used it.....(it even has some teeth marks on it!)

That's been my go-to lure for 2 seasons now. I do have problems w/ the tail and back hook getting too friendly now and then, but not nearly to the extent you guys describe. I would guess one in 20 or so casts. Granted, I have an early version, and I don't know for sure how much Baldy has changed them but my impression was that mine should have been one of the worst for that problem. I use a fluoro leader about 10" long (home made, so I'm not sure of the exact length since they vary slightly). Probably most importantly, I have also learned to minimize the taps greatly (in length, not in intensity or frequency) from when I first started using it. Literally just a couple of inches of rod tip movement is plenty. I have decided that the fouled cast on occasion is a very small price to pay for the number of fish that lure moves. Granted, that is my opinion and mine alone. I wouldn't trade mine for a Wishmaster.

i stick the tip of one treble of the rear hook into the grub/body portion of the rubber tail.
it holds it up out of the way and the bait keeps the same great action.

I didn't really experience this issue during the development of the bait either. If I had experienced it to the extent that you guys are talking about I would have looked for a solution.

I would also suggest two things that have already been mentioned...heat shrink the back hook at an angle, or stick one point of the treble in the grub body.

If you aren't happy with either of those, take the body from a nice fat grub and thread it on the hook shank. The added mass there should keep the hook far enough from the body to greatly help with the tangling, but also leave the hook free swinging and not impede the action. I would start with a 6" Action Plastics Super Goober...the same tail that is on the bait. If a little fatter is required go to the 8" Super Goober. This actually works as a pretty good alternative to T'ing hooks as well.

Thanks for the feedback guys. It helps make the baits better. I'll be heading back to the drawing board for a solution to this one.

You can throw all of the old ones my way! I'll make due somehow.

Got one at the MN expo and have thrown it a few times. Love the action...it's not at all what I was expecting. I saw someone relate it to a reef hawg and I would agree, except the WA Baby Wabull runs true every time. Have not had ANY experience with the tail fouling on the back treble, so reading this kind of surprises me.

I'll have to report back on this after the weekend. I haven't really given it a fair chance since I was just checking out the action off the dock. It could also be in the way I was working the bait since it only occasionally fouled on the cast, the rest of the time it fouled on the retrieve. I'm hoping to throw it a bunch this weekend so hopefully I'll figure it out. Thanks for the input.

I've got one of the early ones too, and it's only fouled up in the way you describe a few times. I'm using 130# flouro (Stealth) leaders with mine, and the action is unbelieveable. Both the regular WA Wabull and the baby WA wabull are flawless IMO. It doesn't take much to work that lure at all, maybe you're being a bit to agressive with it?

Luke, if you're going to change the baby WA wabull? Well, I'll split all the old ones with Sorno!
