It claims to have softer plastic for more lifelike action or are they just that more less durable?

imo neither is very durable.

The newer Pro Dawgs are a lot more durable.. Those made since Jan, Feb. ?

Yeah the pro dawg is awesome, tough and wiggly lol, no other way to describe it. The finish is kinda translucent and you can see the internal harness which is substantial. I'd say they got the issues worked out. Oh, and they don't have the solid wire inside that gets bent anymore.
