Location: Hugo, MN | As I'm sure a lot of guys travel to Canada each summer, I'm assuming most have dealt with the attack of the black flies. Has anybody found a good way to repel the darn things? I've normally broke down and worn pants and boots unless it is really hot. When they're bad it's almost unbearable. I'm hoping someone has found something that works as I've got two weeks up there this year. |

| Some people SWEAR by WD-40. About the only thing I've found that really works is (unfortunately) socks, boots, and jeans. |

Location: SE Wisconsin | There are some really excellent mesh bug suits with hat and face mask. The draw back is they aren't very fitting of course, so tucking your rod into your arm pit and switch hands in the cast will probably end with frustration as your rod butt continuously catches on your bug suit.
Whatever you do, don't use equestrian fly spray. I know it works awesome for horses and was going to suggest it, but I just checked around and I can't find one that safe on human skin.

Location: Johnsonville, Wisconsin | Here's my solution: get a pair of low cost pullover camo pants. Bow hunters use them a lot. They have elastic cuffs and waist band and are very light and airy - breeze blows right through them. I spray them with Permanone and also spray the low spots on the boat. I haven't had the slightest problem with blackflies since I got 'em.

| i wear a pair of light weight outdoors pants like you find from Gander Mtn or Columbia, etc.
i'd rather deal with a bit of heat than those #*^@ flies biting my ankles.

| I had gotten some Repel black fly repelent a couple years ago from uncle Frank at Walschs bay store. Worked well but required reapplications every 2-3 hours. Havent seen it since anywhere. If you can find I would get some. |

Location: Brookfield, WI | Get one of those MC Hammer parachute outfits and a pair of Chuck Taylor high tops. Good for fishing and dancing. He left the top of his open to show his bling. You should keep yours buttoned up and tuck the pants into the Chucks.

| I have used Coils with some success. Doesnt work on windy days but otherwise works good for us. I use the coil holders with the coils and place one in the front on the floor and one in the rear.

Location: Wheeling, IL. | look for a repellent that is close to 100% DEET. Deepwoods Off is 98% and comes in a small spray bottle great for the box. If you have to apply every couple of hours, no big deal, two sprays and your done. Got mine at Walgreens |

Ditto. The Cherokee pounded the large rootstock of goldenseal with bear fat and smeared it on their bodies as an insect repellent. I'm sure it worked, too. I'm sticking with tucking my pants legs in my socks when the flies are really bad. |

| Try "dryer sheets", I learnt this from an "old-timer" up in WaWa, Canada several years ago. It may not be 100 % but it DEFINITELY helps. Pin them to your hat, pants cuffs, etc... |
