I seen in the R&H catalog that Shimano made an "auto clutch" model just for R&H's. From the sounds of it with a 4:2 gear ratio and 25" per crank this might be a good workhorse reel at an affordable price and hopefully hold up well. Have any of you used the Tekota 500's or 600's for casting the big blades/baits?

The "inches Per Crank" stat is so variable I wouldn't base your purchase off of it. I have used the non-custom Tekotas and like them. They're a good all purpose reel. But if you are looking for primarily a blade cranker, go with a Trinidad, Saltiga Surf, or Saltist. Avet makes some neat lever drag big crankers as well. When you consider the variable stat of 25 inches of Line per crank, the Trinidad TN16 has 48 inches. I actually prefer to tone it down to the TN12 or 14.

Well actually im shopping around for a friend. I personally use both 700 TE's and the 700B. Well my buddy doesn't want to spend a ton of money so he was set on a 7000 Pro Rocket, well my Rocket puked shortly after I bought it, it chirped like a bird and seized up tight. So im trying to find him a reel that will be affordable for him and hold up to average usage. I seen this and read a post from somebody somewhere. Any other suggestions?

Check out the Daiwa Saltist 30HA or the 40HA level wind. I just got 2 of the 30's. They are sweet and under $200. I got them from Consumers Marine for like $179 ea. They are sick reels.

It's a wicked cowgirl reel. Get it. There's really nothing that compares. It'll last too.

It maybe won't go as fast as a TN, but it's plenty fast to be effective (as I'm sure you know with your 700's). Plus it AUTO engages... I haven't tried a TN yet, but still don't get how people cast into shallow rocks and manually engage the reel before it snaggs. You guys must be pretty quick on the trigger and never miss!

Compare the Tekota to something Saric uses all the time for 10's...an Avid 300. For the work you would do with that reel, a Tekota can easiely go as fast with way less effort.

I've got a saltist 30ha levelwind and I think it's a really sweet reel. It's going to be on a new 8'6" ProEdge rod that hopefully arrives today. I've only got 2 days on it this year, but it feels solid, and the adjustment to the lever was easy. If I had some dough I'd probably buy another one and get rid of a couple of other reels.

I picked up a 20 Saltist levelwind this winter and can't wait to get it on the water, it is a tank.

Mr. Musky - I was thinking the same as you and bought the Tekota 600 a month ago.

Haven't used it yet, but it seems to me that it's a big blade reel that will get the job done at a price that that isn't out of this world.

If I were looking for a blade reel I would go with the torium 14 it has 6.2 to 1 ratio, but no levelwind. It is the same price as the tekota. I would go tekota for a more all around reel. I have a torium 14 and just ordered a tekota 600.

50inchgrinch it took me a matter of minutes to catch on to the manual clutch. I flip the switch with my thumb as I grab the reel handle. I do miss occasionally but I like it so much I just ordered another reel with it.

I just made about 2 dozen casts with
My new tekota 600 casting a hookless double ten. I think I might like this reel better than the torium I bought last fall for throwing blades.
