I have a 2002 Suzuki 4 stroke 70 hp. Last trip out I noticed the telltale (or peehole) was not as strong of a stream. So, I changed the impeller - it was 5 yrs old and never changed by previous owner. I also flushed out my water lines. I then noticed that my telltale had a metal and fairly wide opening. Could it be that I lost a rubber or plastic insert that fits on the end - therefore changing the appearance of my telltale stream. It was sort of pour out, rather than shooting in a stream. Does anyone have a Suzuki similar to mine that could check and see if I lost a small end piece on the telltale??? Thanks!!!!!!

Yah - I got mixed up - the engine is a Johnson, made by Suzuki though. It is 1 AM and I am a little confused. Thanks!

Well, here's a link to a site with parts diagrams for Suzuki engines:

http://store.brownspoint.com/df70/709808.asp

I am not sure if one of these diagrams would be applicate though, as it is a Johnson. But maybe so. It's worth a look anyway. I didn't find one for Johnson engines yet though.

EDIT: Here's something similar for Johnson/Evinrude:

http://shop2.evinrude.com/ext/index.aspx?s1=01a435c8a3e8a8261da98b6...

Just select "Johnson" in the drop-down window, and you should get a list of model years. Then you can select the area of the engine you want to look at, and you'll get a parts diagram. i didn't spend a lot of time comparing, but the Johnson diagrams look like the Suzuki ones for that engine.

Thanks for those links. I am always impressed by how helpful people are on this site!! I have bookmarked them and will definitely use them in the future. I still couldn't find the outside nozzle for the telltale on those diagrams.
Does anyone have one of these motors so they can visually inspect it and let me know???

Hiya,

The little piece you are talking about is just a fitting that goes into the portion of the engine housing, and your hose attaches to it. Essentially, all it is doing is acting as a restriction of the water flow, which makes it shoot out....similar to what putting a finger or thumb over the end of a garden hose would do. If you choose not to replace it, you may want to get a longer length of hose which can fit through the hole and shoot out that way. The 2 stroke Johnson 40 hp and 50hp series did this...it was a gusher, which was always nice to see...It definitely would not have any issue with getting stuff caught in that little outlet hole due to that.

As long as water is flowing good and hard, you'll have no problem. If you decide to just use a longer hose, get a rubber grommet to go around it in the hole through the engine housing...this will keep the hose from slipping back in and will work as a seal around that location as well...

Thanks Steve,
My motor has a 1/4" diameter metal fitting/opening. The inside has a raised lip so that when I push a piece of short section of 1/4" fuel hose in, it stops at the lip. I rammed a 1/8" rubber tube inside this hose and it now shoots out a pee stream similar to what I used to get. Does anyone see any problems with this? Does the exit/telltale have to have a certain backpressure or does the exit hole size not matter. Just wondering if too small or to big of a hole will change the pressure in the water cooling system or put stress on it. The majority of the cooling water exits at the prop anyways right?

Yeah I have a Suzuki 115 4 stroke and the plastic piece comes out quite easily so it probably blew out at some point.
