| What kind of oil does everyone run in their Mercury motors and why? Does a guy need to run the expensive name brand stuff or will any outboard oil that meets the manufacturer's specs do? I just got a 150 Merc and don't want to mess it up so any advice would be great. Also, if anyone knows of a place where a guy could buy a case of oil cheap, that would be great to know!

| I don't have a merc, but I have a yammy and I would say I would always run the name brand oil, I would run the merc oil in your case. Why would you want to skimp on the lifeblood of your engine. All of the Major boat motor manufactures run extensive tests with these oils and make adjustments accordingly to work with your outboard for performance and longevity. And if your outboard is under warranty I would only run the merc oil. 10 dollars more is cheap insurance in my book, just buy one less lure this year and you can get the better oil. |

Location: Stevens Point, WI | I'm a big fan of Amsoil Synthetic. I haven't owned a four-stroke yet, but this oil performs really well in my 2004 90hp Johnson. It really cut down the smoke and increased efficiency. I fish in the cold alot and it performs really well in this. No need to switch to different viscosities. Just my 2 cents. |

Location: Minnesota | I agree - brand name oil is what I will go with. I found that the boat dealer is the cheapest place to buy the oil. Gander and Fleet farm have to buy their oil from the dealers and then mark it up so I might as well buy it at the same place that the big box stores buy it minus their mark up. |

| AMSOIL............I had a 91 40 horse johnson that ran noticably better with Ams vs Johnson oil.
A friend claims the same with his Mariner.
I have Merc oil in my current motor(Merc), but when I run low its getting filled back up with Amsoil.
It doesn't cost that much more and I do believe it perfoms better. Less smoke, better idle, full synthetic, etc...
I would stay away from the no name cheap stuff!!!
Ams or Merc why take a chance!

| Thanks for all the advice! I just figured it was worth asking the question. I agree that it's not worth the risk running cheaper oil.
One last question, I didn't get an owners manual with my boat and don't know the specific oil I'm supposed to be running. Anyone know where I can find this out. I have a 1996 150 Mercury EFI.

Location: Corning, Iowa | We run a 97, 70 Evinrude, and I use oil that is in between regular, and synthetic. Would there be any advantage to go to all synthetic? I sure like the less smoke. Thanks Doug |

Location: Straight out from shore! | I own a 92 3cyl Merc that I run shipmate oil from fleet farm in and I have never had a problem using this stuff. I'm sure there are advantages to using the manufacturer oil but I can't see spending that much extra on oil because it says quicksilver on the bottle. |

| My old boat had a 94 Evinrude 150 on the back and I noticed a significant drop in smoke when I switched from the Evinrude brand to Amsoil. As long as the new oil meets mnfg. specs. they cannont drop or void your warranty. It is against the law. In my case the Amsoil was actually a little more expensive, but was definately worth it, smoked less and ran better at idle speeds. |

Location: Houlton, WI | well if its a two stroke just get some 2 stroke motor oil, same with four stroke. I think mercury makes special oil for there boats but not sure |
