Subject: Preferred Muskie Rod Lengths

Hi,

I was wondering what everyone's favorite rod length would be if they had to pick one or two lengths for muskie fishing . . . and also with that said . . . how long do you think the next rod you buy will be?

Thanks

7'6"-8'6" I personally like 8 footers for throwing most baits, but that's just my opinion.

I started a few years ago with a 6'6". Used a 7' a little bit. Bought an 8 footer - like it a lot. Then I bought an 8'6", like it too. Bought another 8'6", and am having a rod built that is 8'6". It's starting to look like I prefer 8'6" rods. I would say 8 foot to 8'6" is about ideal. I still really like the 8 foot rod for lots of applications, but I felt like the 8'6" was better for throwing big rubber, and also for casting things like Double Cowgirls, which don't exactly cast like bullets.

The 8'6" gives easier casting and bigger figure 8's, but I think the 8 foot rods might have a 'slight' advantage in working some baits like gliders and walk the dog baits. Hard to wrong with either length.

Have realy got comfortable with the 8' custom from Frank. I like to keep a couple rods rigged up so I can just grap and go instead of changing lures, but I find myself reaching for the shorter rods less and less. Looking to pick up an 8'6" in the near future.

8' and 8'6". Guess if I had to pick one it would be 8'6" since I just ordered two customs that length.

Another vote for 8 and 8'6". My next rod will be a nine footer.

If I had only 2 rods to pick they would be an 8' MH for light stuff and a 7' xh for jerk baits/ gliders/ heavier stuff... Im fairly short though at 5'10" some guys like 8 footers for jerkbaits but not me... and I currently use a 8' H for the heavier stuff and D10s.

The next rod I buy will most likely be the new St. Croix 7'9" xxxh for the really big stuff

8 foot is my favorite though

Another vote for either 8' or 8'6". I like the feel of the 8'6" slightly better (much easier to use all day), but due to rod locker length, I use 8'ers.

I started going 9+ last year. I really like a 9'2" and a 9'6". Smallest rod I use on an everyday basis, is a 8'0.

Besides Okuma EVx, what other musky rods have a Telescoping option? I like longer gods, but rods 8+ feet in length can be a problem for storage. Anyone have any negative experiences with telescoping rods for Muskies?

Personally care for two piece rods.

I think Tica makes telescoping rods.... Thorne Brothers carries them.

I have two Okuma telescoping muskie rods, and they are now my go-to sticks. Top shelf, tough, and easy to fish all day. I balanced both.

Those telescopic Okumas (CVX model, I think?) in 8'6 are great value for the money. My buddy fished with one all season last year in my boat. For $90, you're getting a rod that travels easy and does most things pretty darn well. This rod is excellent for trolling the 8-10" baits as well as all the casting stuff. Nice soft tip, much softer rod than the 8'6 Premiers. For that kind of money you can't beat it. Good rod for surface baits also.

What did you use to balance your rod? Does balancing make a big difference?
