Fished Kinkaid 05-07 April. Strong sustained winds and heavy rains repeatedly throughout the first two days. Water temps in the lo-mid 50's. Saw only one upper 30" fish in the back end of a south east bay near the surface over 5' of water. Totally negative fish. Not even a flinch. she just sank out of view after several casts. Day three brought clear stable weather with water warming quickly in the very back ends of bays up to 59 degrees. Didnt matter north or south end of the lake. Still no muskies. Only a nice 21" 5# largemouth on a chart shumway hot-head. Visibility was decent considering how much rain came down. Too much weather going on to put fish on any pattern. Only saw one angler indicated he boated one fish during the whole time we were there. Was tough going.

No action from my boat on Saturday. Water was 52 degrees when we started. Found 60 degrees up the no wake arm. Saw several boats trolling. I figure most fish are spawning or immediate post spawn right now. I'll be back out on the 24th & 25th.

Friday: Morning water temps were 52 at the landing. Fished near water treatment plant and had mid-30's follow/short strike on a phantom. Water temps were on the raise all day and ended at 62 in the main lake north bays. Throughout the day we raised 12 more, all males, on phantom or shallow raider, shad color. Sadly we say one female floating and upon investigation, we could tell she was gut cut three times and eggs were coming out. Heard stories of bass fisherman doing that, but disappointed it is still happening.
Saturday: Morning water temps were 57, but with the lack of sun only raised to 59. Fishing was very slow around the treatment plant and north bays so we took a run up the river to the far north end. Water was warmer, but a lot darker/dirty. Headed back to midlake north bays and caught a small male on the phantom in the far back area in 5 feet of water. Raised another one a little later.
Sunday: woke to T storms and started the 10 hour drive home early.
All in all it was nice to be casting, but in the future I'll plan on returning like I have in the past - mid/late March. Fish seemed to be either spawning or recent post/spawn. To see the female with eggs was a sign, but then not to see any bigger fish was another. The other factor, we saw which appeared to be a male holding a female by the tail, but can not confirm since we never saw the female, only a fin. The male was vertical in the water with about 10 inches of it's back end out of the water.
We couldn't say fish the baitfish, bc the locator showed schools everywhere. Looked like smaller fish so maybe the redfin shad. We also thought crappies holding in open water just off the breaks leading into the spawning areas.
Good luck to anyone fishing there - it's a nice place to be.

Any luck this past weekend? I am taking my dad on a fishing trip down there all next week before I get married and I am looking for some help on this lake. I have never been there and I am looking for hot areas/colors to fish with. I do not need GPS coordinates, but I am looking for some general advice. I am not looking to fish this lake often or "steal" spots, but just show Dad a great time at a lake that is just far enough away to be different. I would take him to our usual lake, but there are IHSA tourneys and practice all week long and I don't want to fight with boats near home.
Thanks,
Ryan

Kinkaid seemed to be off this year. Buddy and I were down there Easter week. Fish were still spawning, however we did move a few but no takers. O well like grimm said good to get out and cast!

I've been getting absolutely killed out there. I have probably spent 10 solid days out there this spring and haven't even put one in the boat. Had one creep up on a jackpot Saturday but that was it! Last friday had a smaller 30's short hit a 6'' jake. I gotta say it's been pretty #*^@ demoralizing. I am running out of ideas...I've resorted to bass fishing to fill the void. But I must say the spring bass bite is on in SIU.
