Just getting into making my own bucktails and double cowgirl imitations. What are you guys using to bend the .062 and .051 wire?

Thanks!

Looking at old thread seems most guys are either using hand tools or making their own wire bender. Since these are only for personal use I'll try hand tools.

I use a needle nose pliers and a round nose pliers and do it by hand. I've done hundreds of them with the .062 and thousands of them with the .051.

Round nose pliers and needle nose. I've seen pics of a guy using vise grips on the loop while turning the tag end of the wire with the needle nose.

at the expo when they were making cowgirls i liked those "jigs" they used to bend. how it hooked into the loop and a few turns later it was all done. very quick and easy.

I bought a hagens or higens wire bender from lurecraft. Works fantastic for all sorts of wire jobs up to .051. But it cost me about 120 so depends how many you want to make.

You can actually use the Hagen's die to bend .062 if you want. If you use a die grinder (Dremel) to widen the gap on the .052 die, it will bend it alright.
I wouldn't recomend doing it for mass production, but a couple here and there is fine.

To make the loop, I had a custom unit made that is basically just like the Bogg's...just beefier.

To make the wrap I use a Hagen's that I customized.

I've made several hundred on each with zero issues

I took a chunk of 2x4 (about 6 inches long) and drilled 2 drywall screws into the wood (leaving enough room between the screws only for the wire to fit) until all the threading was buried. Then I cut the heads off the screws with a boltcutter and I place the wire between the screws and make my bends that way. I finish the wrap with a vise grip on the tag end and a blunt nose pliers on the loop.
My wirebender might have cost me $0.50 plus some wear and tear on tools that I already owned. My loops are not a perfect circle but more oval. If you want a perfect circle you either need a round nosre pliers or a manufactured bending tool I think.

Dick Moore makes a wire bender that bends .062 wire. It is expensive, maybe around $350. This is the one that I have.

Modified Hagen's works really well with 0.62.
